I ended up buying a used Big Al from the EBMM forum (black/tort/rosewood) and after putting a set of TI flats on it took it to my party/cover band gig on Saturday night. I made a lot of noise about the snikky neck, but truth beknown I've owned several Thunderbirds and Jazzes, so it's no big deal really. I just prefer wider necks.
Anyway, at the risk of sounding like a fanboi, the Big Al is a mighty good bass. I'll never use all the tonal options, because I'm pretty much a set and forget type of guy, but it is a very comfortable bass (much like the Bongo) with perfect balance, and while it's not as aggressive as a Stingray or Bongo, with flats it's a funk machine. It ate up all the Motown and 70/80s disco I threw at it on Saturday night. And it looks a million bucks, at least in this colour combo.
