Did i just do something stoopit?

I was just thinking last night that I'd really like to hear myself (and others) singing on stage with some decent but schlep able monitors. I was surfing around and amongst others, i found EAW VFM 109 with a street price of $800-$900 each. Then I saw someone selling them on the Bay for about half that. 2 hours later someone had bought three of the six available. The only thing I can see wrong with this deal is that they're white. Seems like a stupid color for such a thing but if that's the only reason they're half price, I'll take it.

So I just made a great deal or I blew the price of a really nice used bass.

Those are great monitors, a local sound company uses them and I always liked them on stage.

Maybe I'll get a matching white suit instead.

Not familiar with that model, but have been mightily impressed with size to output ratio of EAW monitors. [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

No they're brand new. Got them today Very, very white.

But maybe I did do something stoopit. I don't have a PA so I hooked it up to my streamliner with the volume all the way off. As soon as it powers up, it pops and shuts down and then tries again. It's a Speakon only connection but I notice afterwards that the EAW jack is a 4 pole connector. Now I thought I read that this thing ran off of one amp with a passive crossover so I assume it's just a speaker. They talk about using a high pass filter or a signal processor but I figured it's still just a plain old speaker.

I think I'm wrong.

OK so I'm learning a lot about SpeakOn Connectors. How exciting!!!

They ebay seller called me up and seems very straight up so I'm not worried about blowing big bucks on speakers that don't even work. Here's the potential problem: My speakon cable that I bought from Bayou is a two conductor cable with NL2 something or other plugs. The jack on the EAW is a NL4 somethingorother even though it probably only has two wires connected to it internally, Ebay guy said he found somewhere that the NL2s and NL4s won't work properly even though they physically connect fine. Perhaps the NL4 has a pass through wiring option that would allow you to daisy chain wires through a single plug. So the Genz is seeing some odd things when plugged into it or maybe even a dead short. Interestingly enough however, The Genz lists its SpeakOn connectors as being NPL4. So I'm not really sure what's going on but it seems fixable with some research and some new cords.

The ebay guy further claims that I won't be disappointed when I finally get these babies to work, that they make a big noise so to speak from a relatively small box. More so if you hook them into a compatible signal processor. The processor re-programs the box while you EQ re-programs the sound in the room.

Another interesting conversation that I had with ebay man. I asked him where he got all these EAW speakers and he said they're the biggest dealer on the East coast. "We've been doing this for 20 years, just like you've had the same phone number for 25 years."

……????

"How come you know that? Kinda scary." says I.

"Ha ha, I don't get out much, I'm kind of a techno geek."

He probably is reading this blog too I suppose. :hid:

Did I mention that they're very, very, very white? I want all of the PA and amps and intruments white now too.

Update:

So I used these monitors a few times in the blues band I'm no longer in and they sounded no different to me than the 10" JBLs that they used previously. Finally took them to the Classic Rock Standards Band last night. Different guy running the PA (not me in either case). Wow, they really sound nice!! Really transparent and natural. Easily make as much volume as the 12" Yamahas we normally use and they take up half the space. EAW makes a new line of monitors that are smaller, lighter and better designed. I love the way the cables connect inside the bass port so they're away from drunken feet (somebody already broke a speakon connector last night). Only problem is these new ones cost about $2K each.

So are the speakers I bought worth it for twice the price of the Yamahas? I think so. Would they have been worth it for 4X the price? I'll judge after some more experience with them. How about @ 8X the price? Not on my musical budget!

I like the truckbed liner spray idea better,
instead of a white suit. I mean, you'd look
greeeaat in skin tight black rubber ... the
"sprayed on" look is sooooo HAWT !

White monitors is cool, especially if there
are colorful dancing stage lights. I would
say the only "stoopit" thing you did is that
you misspelled "stewpud".
