But, G...What do you put on the bass that the strings came from?

You know, it's a crazy thought. But you know how vintage/used clothes are popular? Why not start a vintage/used string store? Maybe even get some big time player to give you their old strings?

Damn, but I'm brilliant!

How did I get involved in this post? I'm not even a Jewish bassist.

I always throw the take-offs in a drawer and mark them
whether they're for 4-in-line or 2x2 tuners. No need to
know eggzacklee what basses the pile of take-offs came
offa ... just the tuners config. I just consigned a bass at
a local shop. It's wearing two different brands of strings
but sounds even across the neck. Next owner is gonna
put his fave strings on it anywho.

Uh huh. I just got a new-to-me EUB that arrived with the stock
strings which are awful [just like every other EUB]. But I'll be
getting a non-original-equipment, well broken-in set tomorrow
from a friend who's saved a few sets. I did attempt to pay for
them, but he insisted otherwise.

EDIT: One week later, update, Ms Diva lurrrrrvs the new ax with
the vintage strings. She raves on and on about it. FWIW [not too
much in the big picture] I'm way happy with the strings myselves !

11th Commandment: Thou shalt pray way fervently to St. Cecelia
before springing any sooprizes on Ms Diva lest she shalt smite thee
and banish thine sooprizes to the darkest of the dark realms, yea
unto the tenth generation. Thou shalt quake and tremble before
her judgement throne, and makest thy most excellent excuses for
why her favorite ax is not upon thy knee. St. Cecelia preserve thee !

While I don't hafta sneak new gear past a wife, said gear hasta win
the ears and the heart of the Diva. Thaz why this is a major win.
