So, this happened Sunday

Postby bigfatbass » Mon Jul 27, 2015 9:34 pm

Yup, me and my buddy Lenny Milano got the call on 48 hours notice to back up John Mooney!

He stepped up to fill in for a regional blues fest slot, and his regular cats nearby couldn't make it. No set list of any kind provided, just 2 song titles.

A few things helped immeasurably:

1. Lenny is a rock, and that's why I called him when they asked if I knew a drummer. There are a few other guys in town who might have been more comfortable with all the 2nd line stuff, but I knew he wouldn't shrink in the spotlight. He is a pro's pro, used to be in Bonamassa's band.

2. John plays pretty much exclusively in open tunings, so you know what key by which guitar he is holding

3. I am a huge fan and already knew the vibe he was looking for, as well as his liking of a few extra measures here and there.

Other than that, it was hang on for the ride, and push it when you can.

Great gig! Been a Mooney fan from the 80s. One of my very best Jazz Fest moments was a Mooney moment. Jealous. [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

We did well following the twists and turns of the mighty Mooney. He only really threw me off once late in the set on Sacred Ground, when he pulled out the counter-point parade whistle. I got right back on the train, but it was the only time I got "the look" and a big wave of where he wanted "one". I'm calling that a win, but I'm still pissed at myself for dropping the beat, lol. Even tunes of his I know really well, he had completely new feels for, and he didn't play any of his "hits" like Dirty Rat, or Gone To Hell. My only bummer of the night was not getting to play either of those tunes with him. For several years Gone To Hell was my fav song to start any road trip with.

Check out some of the older album tracks, as opposed to the solo small combo stuff first. What a player

I recommend "Testimony" using a New Orleans lean. George Porter and Johnny Vidcovich.

I actually knew the bassline for the way he plays the first one in this set of 3, so we actually sounded the most like a real band, I think. Middle tune goes pretty well again, but the third one contains my biggest clam of the night, and the only moment where I had to be straightened out. I had played that funky fucking change 2 dozen times in the tune already, but when he busts out the parade whistle near the end, for some reason it kicked me off the groove and I went to the change early. He got me back on it fast, but I'm still pissed I dropped the ball on him, especially one that I was comfortable with before I even hit the stage.

I take it back. Not available for download. I downloaded "Comin' Your Way" from 1979. Still haven't had time to check it out.
