I am going to be joining your ranks.

I am a complete G&L newbie. I have never owned one before. I started really digging L-1000's sometime last year and I am finally biting the bullet.

I am getting a 1981 L-1000 in sunburst. Mahogany body and ebony fretboard.

Now I get to hang with the cool kids.

(ummmm...you ARE the cool kids...right??)

I just kick myself for not getting one 4 years ago when you could find them for under $500 all day and night.

Awesome! Mine looks very similar. (I assume that an 81 has a nitro finish is that correct?). Here is a picture of mine from the seller. I will post the serial number when I get it.

It's possible but unlikely that it has a nitro finish. Only a tiny number of G&Ls ever had nitro. Some of the earliest ones did so there is a small chance yours has one but nitro was only used on a small number of instruments at the very beginning and once in a great while if they ran out of poly.

Mine is an early 80 (Sep stamp, prod. began in July IIRC)), #75 since the serializing began at 500. And speaking of early, Tris has a sweet Wunkay prototype.

I always thought the early pre-1982 G&L's were nitro. On the ggjaguar site all of the 1981 basses shown are listed with nitro finishes. The seller told me it was nitro but sometimes people don't really know.

Hmmmm...no big deal just curious.

I just got a 5 string Trib from Tim, so it's 7. The white one is an 82 HOG body, and it's a beast Jack.

It could be nitro - just don't be surprised if it isn't. Late 1980/early 1981 instruments have the greatest chance of being nitro but they're still on the rare side. I've seen a few - when I was at Manny's we even got a brand new L2000 in 1999 that had a nitro finish. But a lot of people claim they have nitro finish G&L's when it's actually poly. If there's a lot of finish checking it's likely that's it's nitro but other than that there's no easy way to tell.

Hi Johnny,

Another site to check out is Guitars By Leo. The site is dedicated to G&L, both guitars & bass. There is a registry, and some very knowledgeable people, where G&L is concerned.

Welcome to the G&L club.

I was supposed to get this today but there is 3 feet of snow out there right now and everything is shut down. Guess I will get it tomorrow.

While i am waiting, what do you guys use strings-wise? Does the high output pickup require flats to tame? I am going to use either TI jazz flats, TI jazz rounds or possibly DR Sunbeams although I have never used those before.

Thoughts?
