1953 Precision Bass photos (DUW - LOTS of pics!)

Postby Dark Horse » Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:16 am

Hi, second post here (first was to say "hello" in the ""Welcome" forum !)

Here are some pictures of a 1953 Precision Bass that I took the other day. This one is incredible...the original Blonde finish has aged into varying shades of blonde, butterscotch, amber, and caramel. It has a big, fat neck that just feels great in your hand. It isn't 100% original, but really is a great example of an rare early Fender Bass. It was a true honor to be able to take photos of it and play it. I want to make sure to thank Bass Emporium for letting me document this amazing bass. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

AC

Thanks for coming over, Dark Horse. That axe is way too cool.

Was the neck a soft V? And idea of the month?

Thanks for the invite ...I appreciate it !

Not sure of the month. If I was "in the market" I would certainly pull the neck, control plate, etc, but since I was just taking pics I didn't want to ask. They were kind enough to allow the photos (250 of them !), so I was happy to just do exterior shots.

The neck...HUGE fat "U" shape - I'd almost call it a "C", but it was too deep to be a C...I'm gonna caliper it in the next couple days, but I know it was around (or at least) 1" front to back at the nut ! Huge, but still comfortable.

Fender typically started going to the more "V" shaped necks in 54/55, though there are supposedly earlier examples. None of the Teles, P Basses, Broadcasters, Esquires, or "Nocasters" I've seen that were dated between 1949 and 1953 had a V shaped neck though. Like I say, I'm pretty sure they're out there...I just haven't seen 'em. :)

Thanks !

I was wondering if this thread would be better "here" or in the "vintage" section ... feel free to move it if you feel that the Vintage Forum is more appropriate !

Just curious, are Bass Emporium selling this? Not that I could afford it, but just curious what a beautiful, experienced, vintage piece goes for.

I believe they are selling it on consignment for a customer.

Fantastic pics of a wicked cool bass. Thanks for posting those!

Are those saddles wood? I see you mentioned it's not 100% original.

This is cool...a rare (for me anyway) look at history.

These pics whirl me back about 25 years (and billions of brain cells ago) to a specific spot in a specific bar watching a lanky, older (than me) guy keeping some old school R&B right in The Pocket!

Good reminder.
