I played one at NAMM and also they have one at my local music store.
They are very fun to play. I am not a fan of those silicone strings, but it had amazing tone thru an amp for what it is.

Sam Price the bassist for Honey island Swamp band told me that he has one and loves it. I'd check it out, but I'm not $500 interested.

Bakithi Kumalo (Paul Simon) uses one, that's good enough for me.

I have one. It is definitely not a toy and better than the ashbory bass. It doesn't sound quite like an upright but much closer than any other electric bass type solutions. I'd recommend one if you need to fake an upright sound frequently or play very roots-y music often.

Played a fest a few weeks back with HISB, and Sam Price does indeed have one of these amazing little instruments. Easier to play than an Ashbury, with damn near the tone of a Rob Allen.

I'd tap that.

I saw these debut last year at "Bass Day", and thought they sounded crappy and out of tune. I was literally standing there as the guy pitched it to Bakithi, and watched him mess with it a while then leave with a kind of "thanks but no thanks" look on his face.

Now, maybe they've tweaked it some, but it was a "bad taste in my mouth" moment listening to it.

Blame the player, not the axe. They sound AWESOME.

Saw Kumalo demo'ing at NAMM this year and he was just laying it down. Seems like he & Kala got some deal done as he was the demo both guy a nuber of times. I bought one and played it a bunch. Liked it a lot - throgh an amp - amazing. Acoustically - worthless. I sold mine, a Spruce top, last week to fund another purchase. I'll pickup another - in Koa next time when I recover from that last purchase.

These take a couple of hours to get used to once you get there - super easy to play and through an amp... yowza.

I demo'ed mine the Brother Baker over the phone one day. Told him I had a new oy. He guessed "You're plaing an Upright ?" - OK so over the phone isn't a great test fidelity wise but - to even guess that based on it's a Uke ? amazing sound.

These are in short supply at the moment from what I gather. My local guy is one of the largest kala dealers in the states and they've are back ordered for a while.
I used to look at my dog Smokey and think, "If you were a little smarter, you could tell me what you're thinking," and he'd look back at me like he was saying, "If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to." - Fred Jungclaus
