New custom built Fenderbird

Postby aussiemark » Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:01 pm

This one should arrive in a few days time. Built by Carlo over at The Last Bass Outpost. Hand made mahogany body with licensed Fender neck, nitro finish. Seymour Duncan SSB pickups with custom covers.

Apart from the fact that I ordered a rosewood board instead of maple, it's based on the "Fenderbird" hybrids that Peter Cook built for The Who's John Entwistle.

I got a special deal on one of the first orders, so my price ended up being a lot less than the current pricing for a custom order [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

My cataldobasses.com Fenderbird arrived yesterday, and I assembled and set it up last night. This is an excellent quality instrument, plays at least as nicely as any Gibson/Greco/Orville Thunderbird I've owned, and blows away Epiphone Thunderbirds (I'd have been pissed if it didn't)

Carlo's attention to detail on this instrument is great - he's routed the body under the pickguard to enable easy truss rod adjustment without loosening the neck bolts. The nitro finish is very well done and the colour is spot on.

The only minor criticism I have is that he's just put the Fender waterslide decal on the headstock over the top of the gloss finish (it's an All Parts neck). At some stage I'll need to take the strings off and mask the tuners and neck to spray some clearcoat over the decal.

I don't remember when Fender started shooting a clearcoat over their decals...my '66 p-bass still has the decal on top of the lacquer. Maybe it was when they moved over to poly finish. So, maybe the way yours is right now is historically correct for the period of the necks that were used on the originals. However, I realize that your concern is protecting the decal from damage/climate.

Cool Mark... aside from the rosewood board, it looks just like the replica of JE's that Michael Dolan built for me back '04. [smilie=food-smiley-004.gif]

Yes, JE's Peter Cook-built bass is exactly what this one is based on. I just happen to prefer rosewood over maple, and a P width neck.
