New custom Rob Allen

Postby ghiadub » Sat Apr 16, 2011 12:43 am

I am pretty stoked about this. Rob Allan is building me a custom bass!!!

This bass will be totally different than any other bass he has built for several reasons:

It will be a 5 string mouse (Short Scale 30")- I don't think there is another one
It will be strung E-C - I am not sure how exclusive that is, but every other RB-2-5 I have seen is B-G
It will feature TI Acousticore strings - I was looking for an RB2 to put these on but this will be the first bass Rob has designed with them.

Other than that, Walnut neck, Walnut top, Black parts and Tort binding on an Ash body.

I will post pics as I get them here. Rob needs to retool for this so it might be a long wait. No problem.

Cool. There was an effort a few years back to get a group together to do this and everyone was going to share the extra cost of the re-tooling but it never did get off the ground. I know there'll be some excited Rob Allen fans when they hear about this. [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif]

I think a 5 string Mouse strung E - C is going to be great. If that high C string sounds good, it'll give the 30" Mouse about the same range as a regular sized bass.

Rob will be making a mock up to figure out the tooling and then he will be sending me photos of wood and finally the build stage photos. I am planning on sharing them all here.

I think it's quite rare. I do know Pino Palladino has a Rob Allen that was E-C from the factory - puts you in good company!

IIRC, Rob has made a Deep 5 in 34" scale b/c it was going to be strung E-C.

But there's still something magical about that 30" Mouse.

I got word from Rob that I am getting a rare solid ash body. A beautiful chunk of wood according to Rob.

I should have some photos of the top to choose from in the next few weeks to post as well.

Yeah Brad, this will be close to the Pino but just a little shorter as Pino went with a 32" I think. I wish I had those spider hands, but with a 30" scale I will be a little closer.

It will sound totally different than most Mice thanks to the strings. Rob was not offended when I bassically asked for a mouse that sounds like a Turner Ren.

Any guesses on what I went with?

Here is the one piece ash body:

I'd guess #3? They all look nice, is that flame on the top one or sawing marks?

Brad is Correct! Top one has flame, but I am more into subtle, so I went with #3. Those are all unsanded, it should look a lot better once Rob has done some finishing. IF you look close you can see the really cool black grain lines that are pretty rare according to Rob.

Nice choice with #3,
although #2 is interesting.

I could pass on the one piece ash.

New custom Rob Allen

Well I just heard from Rob and it looks like there will be a new line of 5 string mice based on my order.

I wonder if he will call it the ghiadub?
