Behold, Excalibur.....

Postby Cheap Bass Tard » Fri Dec 09, 2011 11:48 am

For only a few bucks more than it would have cost me to put this bass together, I contracted Dan Atkinson to do the work for me. I think it turned out rather nicely. Oh yeah, and cost less than $2 grand.

Hipshot hardware. Swamp Ash body. Maple top. Gnarly Birdseye neck and fretboard. Nordstrand Big Singles, 3-band pre with switchable mids and passive tone. Amazing sounding and playing bass. I don't think there's a better pickup/pre-amp combination out there that Nordstrand's stuff. Just very musical sounding. Which is frustrating b/c it only gives me more GAS.

If you look in the figure of the wood between the end of the fretboard and the neck pickup, you can see a grinning cat.

Very nice! I have done the BS and Nordy pre before and it indeed did kill. Unfortunetly, I dont have that bass anymore and your bass is gassing me now.

I kinda see the cat.

...but I also see that eye from "Lord of the Rings".

I will unequivocally state that this is easily the nicest bass I've owned. Better than my Czech MTD, better than my Roscoe, better than my G&L, Fender, Laklands, etc...

Just plays and sounds amazing. I will never use another preamp that is not a Nordstrand.

I wish Atkinson would do a 5-string. I would build basically the same bass except I think I want a John East preamp. Everything I'm hearing about those Big Singles is great. I really want to try to pickups.

Did Dan do the finish or did you get it that way from USACG?
