I just hit this beauty on evilbay ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160816852773

Bruce Johnson says I's done good -

That's great that you bought #28! You got a bargain too, at US$2999. Several years ago, it would have sold for about $4000.

I currently know of the existence of 10 of the approximately 54 prototypes. Yours, #28, is one of the three that are in all-original, excellent condition.

Now, to go and sell some stuff, to offset the cost of this one! [smilie=fun_84.gif]

Nice!

I've always loved those basses. Don't know why.

I always dug Michael Been's tone. RIP... ( this bass was actually stolen from a Hollywood storage, but was found and returned to his son from BRMC)

Arrived today via Fedex from Shipito in California, from the seller in New Jersey via UPS Ground. 13 days all up, including the stop in California to be opened for photos and repacked, as well as Customs inspection here. Impressive.

My first impressions -

* It's in great condition, and confirms what Bruce Johnson told me about this bass (it's one of only 3 of the 50 or so hand made 1966 prototypes that are in original condition)

* It looks and feels much less fragile in person than I imagined - despite all the ornate design features it is built like a tank and feels very workman-like when it's in your hands - very much like a P bass

* weight is medium - probably around 8 1/2lbs or thereabouts

* like many basses from the 1960s, the bridge cover has foam mutes attached to the underside - in this case the entire cover slides to engage the mutes

* the bass arrived in tune but given the climate change from the northern summer to our winter it looks like it will need a slight truss rod tweak when I get home tonight to introduce a little more relief - the action is very low and a little buzzy right now

* is currently wearing D'Addario rounds, but I have two sets of custom length Chromes on the way from Bruce Johnson (even extra long strings are too short for these basses, because of the length of the headstock and the location of the tailpiece)

Overally, I'm stoked to finally own an AEB-1 in such great condition, and am really looking forward to plugging it in tonight when I get home from work :P
