Heavyweight...

Postby Telebass » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:44 pm

As noted in the "One of a Kind" forum, I'm going to be gigging, or trying to, a 13.6lb Plexiglas Precision tomorrow. [smilie=smilie_kopf.gif]
I'll let you know how it goes.
Hopefully not from a hospital bed...

I do have a VERY big strap for it.

It was a straight 14lbs, but the Badass removal helped. Just a little bit.

I have a reconstructed lower spine, so this will be a *short* experiment! Then I'll switch back to the black Precision (8.8lbs)!

A few months back I picked up a plexiglass body jazz style 5-string. It was stoopidly cheap, and I admittedly was attracted to the audaciousness of it. [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif] I changed the passive vol/vol/tone controls to passive vol/blend/tone. I don't find it particularly heavy; I have yet to weigh it, but maybe 9-10 lbs is my estimate. I use wide straps (3.5 to 4 inch) to alleviate any effects from wearing a heavy bass. It sounds surprisingly good for being a cheap instrument. No one in any bands I have used it have chased me out, and they have given me good-natured grief about it (especially since it now is strung with yellow DR Neons), but after hearing how good it sounds they shut right up.

Well, the bass sounds great at gig volumes. But two songs in, and it was history! I can still feel it 18 hours later!
But for home/sit-down gigs/rehearsal/recording - it's the one!

Looks cool, sounds cool, but even I don't do 14lb basses anymore. I have a Conklin Sidewinder that weighs in at 14lb 7oz with a solid maple body and neck. It's got that zing, but it's frickin heavy.

Have ordered one of these:

Slinger

Hopefully it will enable me to gig the bass at least once in a while!

I once took a repair class from a very creative luthier, who had built a metal bass, must have weighed close to 15 lbs.
It wasn't cheap either, but I plugged it in and it had a VERY FULL ROUND TONE to die for.

A freind and I worked at a foundry in 1970- he cast an aluminum guitar body from a POS import. We set it up and it rang forever. Weight 22 lbs
