OK, got the slinger strap! Played a whole set with it! To make it comfortable, I actually kept the original 4" strap on as well as the slinger, so weight was really well distributed. Bit of a faff getting it on, but I could probably have done the entire gig. No aches or pains today either, unlike the first time I tried it!

Result!

Is this the one that goes around your waist or over both shoulders?

This one goes around the waist and has a conventional shoulder strap too. I am going to try it on a more normal bass and see how that feels. The only slight downside is that it puts the bass lower than I normally play, but otherwise, a good result! Just a bit fussy trying to get the waist strap done up with the weight of the bass breaking your collarbone...

In the 60's Fender had a belt looking rig . . . sort of like a weight lifter's belt for guys that were converting from uprights.
It used a strap pin of somekind in the center of the body.

Sounds like that's where ZZ Top got their ideas from!

Here's one other variation to that idea from the flotsum the 80's punk scene:

From F*ender Forums about the guy in the picture: "apparently, its done (at least by him) with a very long strap wrapped around (and crossed, like an x, on your back) just above your hip bones..."

(Incidently, eventually the guy in the picture did play & record an awesome version of "Just Got Paid")
