Opinions Wanted: GB STL900 vs. Shuttle 9.0

Postby Mr. Mom » Sat Oct 27, 2012 7:13 am

Hey guys, just want your opinions.

This amp would be for pickup gigs as I use IEM's for almost all of my work these days. It would be paired with one of two of those little GK Neo 1x12 II's. Mostly for electric but also the occassional upright gig. I also like to use a little Fodera Model 2000 pedal pre. Adds that little sumpin' sumpin' to my tone that I dig.

I was leaning towrads the wooliness of the STL900 but maybe the 9.0 would be better with the extra semi-para mid control?

And I've already pretty much decided on a GB product.

Give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Bruce, Ed Friedland did a great job demoing these ( links below). The Streamliners have 3 12AX7's where the Shuttles have 1. To my ears the Streamliners have the SVT Vintage vibe in almost every sense from clean to overdriven. The Shuttles are more apt to get "high fi" or "modern" tones, but still get "deep". Both THUMP. I have to back the bass eq to about 10"oclock on the Streamliner. I suggest using the search function (top right) and search for both, as they were both discussed at length. Both sound good but the Shuttle is going to be a bit more versatile. Also, I prefer the 9.2 over the 9.0 as it seems to have more bottom. I'd pick the 9.2 over the Streamliner due to versatility (and it's a smaller pkg).

As devil's advocate... I would go the other way. The Streamliner has 'character'. Most definately an old school vibe to it. It is not a one trick pony but there is a definate signature. While I agree that the Shuttle is versatile in that it can get a lot of sounds, to me they were mostly boring... Note: I have absolutely no use for anything that resembles a Marcus Miller kinda thing. Me do P with flats, drag hairy knuckles, drive band, let lead guy alone...

YMMV and all the other 40 disclaimers... BTW - a 900 to drive a 1x12 ? My streamliner 600 seems to do pretty well pushing my 8 ohm 12.6... Does a nice job on the 4 ohm 2x15 as well of course.

My .02

I recall you and I falling on different sides of the tonal spectrum in the past. Remembering that may be helpful or not...

Pete, what is this "search" you speak of?? [smilie=fun_84.gif] I guess I do fail on the using of search from time to time. OK, alllllll the time!

From what Pete says the 9.0 is no longer in production, so it's the 9.2 vs. the STL900.

Mal, I'm a big fan of headroom and I'll need to power up to two 1x12's. And I have to admit it, but after being in charge of running sound for the band I'm in, I....I....(gulp)...And I can't believe I'm going to admint this, but I'm starting to lean in your direction tone-wise.

Oh man. I feel so dirty.

If it was the Streamliner vs. the 9.0, then I'd definitely go Streamliner, but the 9.2 is a very different amp than the 9.0. I've owned the Shuttle 6.0 and the Shuttle Max and sold both b/c I couldn't get the bottom end/low mids that I like. I have tried the 9.2 at the gtg and thought it was much more to my liking. But I could probably be happy with a Streamliner too. [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif]

The 9.2 has added 3DPM circuitry that the Streamliners come with. I think that's the difference Fred is describing...

Along with our preamp design that rivals that of many classic tube amplifiers, the STREAMLINER™ 600 also features our proprietary 3 Dimensional Power Management analog technology. Our 3DPM™ adds heft and girth to each individual note, while enhancing the amplifiers responsiveness and headroom. It provides the dynamic and 3 dimensional tone and feel of an all tube power amp design.

Again, I have to back the Bass freqs off, which is a good thing to me. [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

I believe the EQ points were also changed with the 9.2

I know there's been lots of discussion about the differences on TB.

I bought a second Streamliner when my first one went down after many, many gigs, besides buying the second one for backup, this is the longest I've ever been GAS free amp wise that I think I've ever gone. I also use the 900 to power a single 112 for duo gigs. Love that amp!!!!!!

Went down? What happened? I'm sure they've fixed it but what was the issue?

Also, this might help:

Just the preamp section went down, I was able to go from my Avalon into the effects return to do the gig. Yeah, the service department was great to deal with and they fixed it quick, but never really said what it was. Not a tube issue I was told though.

Well, pretty sure I'm going to have a STL on the way soon. Pete can get a pretty nice price for these (and other GB products, I assume), and the GAS was too much to resist.

I wanted to off some other gear first, but my slush fund is looking pretty good and I'll get to try out a couple of preamp pedals through the FX loop of the STL900 to see which one (FX pedal) matches up with the STL the best.

I've also got a bass coming via Mr. Hoyt once the smoke clears from Sandy. Hoooooo boy.....

Trying....not....to get....too.....excited...........Must resist urge....to.........get .....too excited.............
