76' V4 Ampeg for bass?

Postby ken woodward » Mon Jan 28, 2013 3:27 pm

Anyone out ther using a V4 Ampeg for bass? I just got a sweet one from a guy in Detroit. I payed $500.00 for it plus $80.00 for shipping to Utah. It's almost like new. I works fine and still has the original magnavox tubes it it. That worries me. My tech is going to check it out for any problems. I used one of these back in the day for bass, and it seems to me it was great. I still have some problems remembering the 70's. Anyway I will be pairing it up with one of Fliptop's sealed 410 cabs. I should see it in about 3 weeks. Just wondering if anyone else has used or is using one of these amazing amps today. Now the 77' SVT can rest a bit. Ken

Ken is it a V-4 or a V4-B? I have run my V-4B with the 8X10 and it simply kicks ass. I don't haul the V-9 or the cab anymore, they both might be gone this afternoon...

Congrats, I really dig the V4-B. [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Here's mine...

I had a V-4 a few years back. It had the reverb tank but I didn't use it. I was trying to get the SVT tone but couldn't get what I was after with it. I sold it locally.

The V4-B gets the SVT tone, it breaks up around 11'o on mine.

Just to clarify: This is the V4, not the V4B. I would love to have the V4B, but they are very hard to find intact. I used the V4 back in the day and remember it could get just as low as the V4B.What's the major differences between the two other than the reverb on the V4? Any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks all,Ken

The only difference (as far as I know) b/w the V-4 and the V-4B is that the B doesn't have the reverb tank. I guess I just wasn't playing it loud enough to get the tone that I was after. [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif]

You're going to need to type that louder, what was that?

Ken, I found this....

"The early V4s had a input gain switch plus reverb while the V4Bs had a ultra-low switch, no input gain or reverb. The EQ sections are also different. The later V4s with the distortion control are very, very different than the "traditional" V4s but the V4s with the master volume are essentially the same as the early models with the addition of the master."

Cool! I guess I'm lucky then, cause this one has the volume master control as well. Thanks, Ken

The key to one being loud enough is speaker surface. An 8x10 will rock. A 4x10 will be OK... much less paper will be weak.... at least for my gigs. We have discussed this before. Some players can get away with a lot less headroom than I personally like. I like a lot of wattage to work with. i don't turn up or down as much as change attack for dynamics. That being said i too own one. I let my SVT go since I never haul it and kept the V4. I am eying it with bad intent now cause I need the money more than I need the memory. It's got that Ampeg tube tone though. Can't get it any other way. [smilie=cool-smiley-031.gif]

Pete, my V-9 and SVT cab sold. The V4-B makes it easier.

I don't miss mine too much man. The V4 makes me smile when I fire it up. Hope you got some nice change for the big rig.
Im in a purging mode. Seems like letting the first piece go is the hardest part. I have plans to dump a bunch if I can find decent prices. My Alembic, PA, studio stuff, preamps....all gotta go. If I haven't played it in a year its dead weight.

Same here with purging. I got back what I had into it, and it went to good home [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

There is an Ampeg V4 website as I recall. And I also recall that the V4 & V4b have a difference in the preamp or tone stack or something. I tried a V4 for a spell and found it unusable since it broke up way too early. But from what I read on that website, it may have just been an issue with the one I had.

For best results, use a sealed cab. Great sounding amp but not ideal for a very loud gig. As far as tone? perfect.
