Lightweight drop-in replacements for 70-s P-bass tuners

Postby vates » Mon May 30, 2011 7:04 am

Dear fellow forumites,

The subject says it all :)
I need something like Res-o-Lites for 60-s type tuners (reverse or non-reverse) but to fit my 73-74-ish P-bass directly. Something very light but of a great quality.

Thanks!

Thank you for your thoughts!

However, I'm searching for tuners that shall comply with such two parameters:

A. They shall have the same hole pattern as stock tuners; and
B. They shall be significantly lighter.

Option, proposed by harleyyy: A, but not B;
Proposed by hmagman: B, but not A.

My aim is to get something like Gotoh makes to replace 60-s like tuners. Alas, there're no "Res-o-Lites" with 70-s (Schallers) pattern...

Check out the Hipshot HB2 tuners on their website. Maybe a direct replacement for your needs...

That's what harleyyy actually proposed. I don't think these are really any lighter...

They actually are much lighter - even with the full base. If you want the same footprint - I don't think you can go lighter

Thanks! I will send an inquiry to Hipshot directly. And then compare the declared weight to Schallers (or will weight my actual tuners). Cheers!

I saw somebody at NAMM a couple years ago was showing an aluminum drop in replacement for the standard hole pattern vintage Fender tuner. Can't remember for sure who it was but I think it might have been Gotoh.

OK, did a little more research. They are from Gotoh and they are called Res-O-Lite. Allparts has the the large plate reverse version which is not what you need but you might call them and see if they can get the standard vintage style that you need. Sounds like these are fairly unavailable from what I see on the interwebs but worth a try.

@Wymore Guitars: Thanks, I knew about these earlier. See my first post in the thread.

@steveonbass: I've contacted Hipshot. It looks like HB2 are ~22g lighter (each) than Schaller BMFL. It gives a loss of about 88g (~3.1oz) for the whole set. Not bad. But it's not worth the swap. I'll continue my search...

More to this topic. Here's a response from GOTOH:

Me: Do you have or do you plan to have replacement tuners for CBS Fender basses (like your current GB2s) in Res-O-Lite edition?

Gotoh: At a present stage, there is no schedule which develops the RES-O-LITE specification of GB2. However, we will take your opinion into consideration, when developing a future new product.
