Fretless Fender Precision build

Postby Rhian Batson » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:44 pm

I got around to finishing my fretless build. I scored a nice 80's dimarzio maple fretless P neck for a song as part of a parts jazz and mated to a white MIJ P/tort body I had loaded with a BA2, MIA Fender pickup and a Raven Labs PBR-1 preamp to complete the bass. I slapped on a TV precision logo and strung it up with some chromes. After playing with a pocket shim and neck relief, this bass is lown n fast with great Mwuah. I wanted to make a quick sound demo but time is limited and I am out on business all next week, so some hasty pics will have to do for now until I get back.

Fun bass to play though. Truth be told I think I have around 170 bucks ... maybe 200 into this bass. I'm happy to have a fretless bass back in the mix and the PBR-1 kills. Wish RL did't go belly up so fast as they made killer P and J preamps IMHO. Anyways, lotsa fun puting this one together [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Oh man Rhian that looks GREAT! And I bet it sounds great too. [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

I'm with you on the PBR-1 pre's. They are a treasure for those who still have 'em.

Good job.

So after playing the bass some more, I've decided to remove the BA2 and go with a standard Fender bridge because I just wasn't into the idea of having to shim the hell out of the neck in order to get the action low enough where I like it - the neck pocket on this body seems to be a bit more shallow for whatever reason. Now with the Standard bridge, I can get the A & D strings low enough but the E & G are a bit up too much for my tastes and cause a noticeable volume difference. Adjust up and the A/D are too hot and drop them down and the E/G are too quiet, so the next step is to grind down the E & G saddles on a lathe. I did this with a Gotoh201 (which I still have) with excellent results.

Also, I decided to take the pickup cover off as I like to play with all those false harmonics on a fretless bass and while it looks great and I find to be quite functional on a fretted bass, on the fretless it just gets in my way. So, the bass tweaking goes on [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif] . I also think I'll give the truss a 1/4 turn for a little bit more back bow when I take the bridge off to work on the E/G saddles.

The fun continues [smilie=food-smiley-004.gif]

Thanks guys [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif] Rob, that's a great idea. I'll try and get the BF bassman and 2x12 mic'd up and record some sounds this weekend.
