Sourcing gigs - analysis of the past 12 months

Postby aussiemark » Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:50 pm

With the first year of Rolling Stoned under our belts, and a pretty healthy 25 gigs in the book in 12 months, I did some analysis to see where/how we got these gigs.

36% have been booked directly by agents on behalf of venues (ie. the system)

36% have been booked directly by us with venues through existing contacts we have from other bands we've played in etc (ie. our network)

24% have been booked directly by us with venues after "door knocking" via email - we send out a mass email to venues telling them about us to spark their interest and they respond and want to book us (ie. cold calling)

4% have been booked by venues who have come across our MySpace page (ie. social networking)

The last number seems low, but most of the other 96% have looked at our MySpace page to check us out before getting in touch with us to make a booking.

Bottom line, some kind of online presence is essential to get gigs - people want to see videos, photos or listen to audio samples, see where else you've played etc, but plain old fashioned networking is still a big factor in getting gigs.

Too true.

I get gigs by hustling them up the old school way-
Press kits delivered by hand after a phone call
but our bio lists a MySpace link where sound files are posted
(I'm working on a Facebook page now)
and everyone who's hired us has said that they liked the mp3s online,
even though the press kit includes a CD of the same recordings.

Go figure...

That is a good mix of bookings. Nice job on the analysis too.
