Torted my Acoustibass

Torted my Acoustibass

Postby Rich M » Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:49 pm

I felt that the metal control plate on the face of my Godin Acoustibass detracted from an otherwise beautiful instrument, and since I had an old broken tort pickguard, I decided to try to make my own tort control plate. I used my dremel tool and a set of files to cut and shape it. I made a few mistakes with the dremel tool, so I used 600, 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit wet sandpaper on the scratched area and then buffed and polished it with Meguiars PlastiX cleaner/polish– used for removing scratches and polishing clear plastic headlights and plastic convertible, boat and airplane windows, etc.

I think it turned out pretty well, but for the amount of time it took me I would have been better off sending the metal plate to a custom pickguard maker.

Very nice, I like it!!! I think tort on sunburst is a great combination. Good review of your repair, I've done the same thing myself and the fine grit papers work well for this. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice!

I think the tort looks way "warmer" than the original.
Beautiful job!

I definitely like the color of that tort better than the original. Nice work, too!

Thanks, guys.

Just for kicks I sent an e-mail to Godin with a couple pics of the tort control plate (I had e-mailed them previously to ask for a wiring diagram, which they promptly sent).

Here's the response I just received:
