What a bass! Don Rodrigo, Ser# is B013349. Weight - 10lbs, maybe 10.5... Goin' to find out with bathroom scale method. Seems slightly heavier than Brownie. Colored ball ends of strings - D'Addarios and long enough! First sound check on my Trace Elliot Commando here in the living room - great!

Re: I just had

Postby Chuck B » Mon Jan 26, 2009 8:13 am

I just have made some pics. Can anybody be so kind and help me out hosting them?

Unfortunately band practice was cancelled yesterday. Went to the six-stringer to play a little. He has an old Fender Showman amp and a big old cabinet, 2 x 12 or 2 x 15 speakers. The loudness difference was bigger than through my TE at home. Even through this old rig the bass sounds very funky. I had already noticed that frets are in good condition. The guitarist is sure that it has been refretted with jumbo frets. I made a pic showing both 78 & 79 necks. That could explain a difference in color on the fretboard at 14th fret. But this has been made absolutely professional, high glossed. I've made a pic of the pup too, the coils are dark. 6stringer thinks that they have been darkened. I'd like to get your opinions. The pup is mounted higher than on the 78, might be a reason for loudness difference.
I am still happy with this bass. Playability is great.

Chuck...I got your pics. Give me a day or so to resize and upload to my website.

The wider fret wire on your new 1979 Bass will most likely be original. The wire used to be thinner as on your Walnut Bass ("Brownie") before they went to a thicker wire after around mid 1977. Are you sure Brownie is 1978? Going by the serial number and thinner wire I would have said it's a 1977 Bass. But I suppose they could have changed a little latter or perhaps there's an over-lap period.

See the pics below. The top one has the thicker wire and the bottom one has the thinner. Both pics are from 1977 Basses:
