I just had (now with pics)

Thank you, Gav.,

for hosting the pics. I've just sent you smaller pics. Brownie's body & neck are both stamped in 1978, february and september. I did take the neck off because I've seen similar ser# from '77 basses on your website.

Thx again, Gav., for hosting the pics.
The different frets just look like those in your pics. Just got email from the seller, he can't tell anything about the history of the bass.

Rod Trussbroken wrote: The wire used to be thinner as on your Walnut Bass ("Brownie") before they went to a thicker wire after around mid 1977. Are you sure Brownie is 1978? Going by the serial number and thinner wire I would have said it's a 1977 Bass. But I suppose they could have changed a little latter or perhaps there's an over-lap period.

Gav, here is a pic of my 79 fret wire [smilie=coz.gif]

Yep, definitely narrow Chuck. Thanks, I've had this for awhile and it will stay. Congrats on the cool natch [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Hey Pete...

I did a comparison a while back with all the many Pre-EB Ray pics I have on file. The early 1976 Basses had the heavier fret wire and then went to the thin before appearing to revert back to the thick wire after c. mid 1977. It must have been coincidence that I had no thin wire examples past that date.

After Chucks 1978 example I thought there may have been an over-lapping period but, after seeing yours, the two wires appear to have been used at random!!! [smilie=coz.gif]

It's the same with their neck profiles which appear to be random. Some are "D" while others are "U" shaped [smilie=icon_confused.gif]

It would be interesting to see what frets others have.

Finally played it with the band through my SWR-rig. Turned the gain back twice. Aboslutely different from Brownie - no warm rock sound but lot of attack, a thumb machine. Weight I think goes to 11 lbs.

Hey Chuck,

congrats on your new bass! [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Not totally sure but if you're looking for some more history behind your bass maybe it makes sense to please check here.

Stingray Link

Basses look the same to me from the wood of the back?! Just guessing. PM me if you're interested in more info.
