Okay, I'm in...

Postby GonzoBass » Tue Jun 24, 2008 10:32 pm

Got me my first fretless!!!

I put a new neck on the Carvin BK4A yesterday
(maple with an ebony fingerboard, no lines or dots other than the top markers)
and strung up with a set of flatwounds tonight.

Might need to take it apart and shim it yet,
but I can "mwah" now and slide harmonics.

Well, I played upright in college
and have tinkered with a few in various music stores that I've taught/worked at over the years,
but this is the first one I've ever owned.

I shimmed it, turned the rod and tweaked the action a bit tonight.
Now how the f#%k am I supposed to set the intonation on this thing?

Set it "close".

Intonation is that jar of unobtainium we're always questing for; the lesson never mastered. Enjoy the journey!

Looks nice! I know a Berklee grad with a fretless Carvin 5er, he slaps the hell out of it.

Thanks Gil!

I ended up setting the intonation using the opens
and the harmonics at the 12th/19th frets.

Which flats Pete?
Well, the local music store had a set of flatwounds.
So I bought 'em.
Fenders, I believe they are 100-50.
Just couldn't wait for a set to come in the mail.

The fingered note needs to be on pitch just as it would be on a fretted bass.
So, the intonation is set the same old way, once you get the feel for where the note rings from in relation to your finger placement.

Took it to the coffee shop Friday
and played "Blue Trane" to bust it's cherry.

Not quite comfortable enough to play a whole set with it yet,
but I thought I did alright
and the guitard said it sounded cool.

Keep at it, and it gets easier.

Then it gets fun.

Now go back and give that first Bad Company album another listen.
