Piezo PU Solid Bodies .... who else ?

Not solid... But the godin Acoustibass I scored here years ago is my #1 under acoutic instument where I also sing. It's fretted but is voiced really well. Strung with LaBella nylons, it is real woody.

This one is close to solid.. My Barker Brio has the Graphtech piezo system. Love it. I rarely ever dial in any of the Sadowsky split P ... The rop & back are about .375 " thick... Might as well be solid... Fretted again. d'addario nylons on that one.
I used to look at my dog Smokey and think, "If you were a little smarter, you could tell me what you're thinking," and he'd look back at me like he was saying, "If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to." - Fred Jungclaus

I've often thought about a fretless solid core bass with piezo's only: Probably a western red cedar body and mahogany neck.....probably a cocobolo fingerboard....... that thing should sing like an angel, as long as it doesn't have any wolf tones... but if the body is thick enough it should be fine..... and SUPER light...... a Jazz, folk or roots music player would be in heaven I think.......

happy Sunday.

What you describe is real similar to my Dave Wendler
FL bass. Hog neck, red cedar body, piezo. All I can say
is you've got a bassically great recipe/formula there !

Another solid body with piezo pup is the Alain Caron signature model F Bass.

i've modded fretless warwick basses with ghost saddles. coupled with a delano mag pup via fishman buffer. a little work, but you can't tell there is any alteration, and, coupled with the woody growl of a 'wick, it's a cheap but cool enhancement.
edit: have i goofed, and the thread is based on factory install only instruments?

FACTORY installed ? Altho I didn't install the piezo in my Wendler I'd hardly call it
"factory installed" .... I think Dave Wendler would prolly take offense if anyone
said his basses were "factory-built". Even the necks are not CNC ... you can really
feel the vestigal effects of hand shaping a neck with a spoke shave.

IOW, Factory Schmactory ! Solid body + piezo is a concept, and a parallel tonal
universe vs typical mag PU solid body "Electric Bass Geetars". The concept and
the resulting bass voicing, is unrelated to what sort of factory, workshop, or
possibley even sweatshop, produces the instrument. Some of mine are custom,
some are traditional old line USA factory names, and some wear Asian labels.

Having gathered unto myselves a bunch of these musical mutants, one thing has
particularly sooprized me. Amongst those having both mag and piezo PUs on the
same ax, some basses get really magical in the approximately 50/50 PU blend
range, you could say it's "greater than the sum of its parts". That was a reeeally
pleasant sooprize. Only some of them act this way. Others do exactly what one
might predict, in that their voicing simply shifts from mainly acoustic to 100%
electric, with a predictable "a bit of both" voice at the midpoint. The magical
basses, OTOH, actually have a sorta third voice that occurs at/near the 50/50
mix on the blend knob. Verrrrry cool :-)
