This bass is fretless. It started as a no-name (probably a Lotus) found in a pawn shop, coverdd with runny black spray paint, missing half its hardware.

I did the following:

De-fretted it, filled the fretlines with .020 polystyrene, sanded lightly and tung oiled the rosewood fretboard.
Took the laminate body down to bare wood, sealed and refin'd with 7 coats of acrylic lacquer.
Painted headstock to match, using airbrush to do the black burst around the edges.
    Replaced all hardware with black.
Installed a beautiful 70's (?) heavy black Guild bridge with lots of adjustment.
Installed DiMarzio pickups, carefully selected on Ebay cuz they wuz affordable!
    Installed Fender nylon tape-wrapped strings.
Changed the control setup to stack-knob configuration so I have separate volume and tone for each pickup.

This is a very nice-sounding, easy to play bass. The neck is fairly flat and a bit broad, but it's comfortable. it's also fairly light at less than 9 pounds. Click on any photo for a bigger version.

Peter,

Ok...tell me about your fretless. Not sure if it's a custom.

BADASS fretless for sure.

My first fretless ever - a Waterstone Guitars ME-1. I put SIT Power Flats (groundwounds) on it to protect the rw board and am having lots of fun making sick whale sounds. I can definitely see why people say "fretless is addictive". I'm now thinking I need a skinny necked G&L fretless too.

I'm building a fretless to use until my fretless 8 is finished (I hope) later this year... but I'm about a month or so away from being ready to post pics.

soon, though!
