That attutude always seemed so closed minded. So being the penultimate nonconformist that I am, I played blues with a de-fretted Hagstrom Big Sweede for 20 years or so. Never wanted Pee Bass cause that's 90% of what you saw. Now that I'm a aging Rebublican (well in some ways) i find my self interested in the classics. Actually, I could probably borrow a friend's Pee Bass and answer my own question. Probably doesn't play as nicely as a Lakland but it would give me an idea if what it sounded like

Wish I had bought the Scheff that was for sale here a while ago. Betcha that would sound pretty nice with flats on it. Or maybe a full size Lakland Hollowbody.

Probably don't need anything but just want to buy one last bass before I check out. You know, one last bass like the last several "last" basses I've bought. [smilie=grinning-smiley-044.gif]

Thanks for the input. Where else could I have this converstiosn?
There are two kinds of music, the good kind and the other kind. I like both.

That looks well loved. Who made it?

Dan Atkinson. He's not building any longer. He used USACG bodies and necks. That one is a "lite relic" and it's several years old. Normally I'm not a fan of relics, but that one had all the right stuff. The P pickup is a Sadowsky and the J is an EMG. It's passive.

Might have been my Scheff. I sold it because the Lakland Hollowbody did the same thing. I imagine yours is very close to sound of a Scheff frankly. I wish i could take that short scale off your hands but alas.....no dough.

Borrow your friend's bass. Set it up the best you can and experiment with strings.

Not sure about the "magic" of a P-bass. You expect to see a P used on roots/American type of stuff. Just what Pete alluded to earlier in this thread.

Again, IMO, YMMV, etc etc.

Don't forget your hands in all this tone talk either!

And to bring it back to Lakland, if you ever want/need a P, get a Lakie. USA or Skyline...Lakies are killer instruments.

Oboy do I see myself in your words :-)

And ... I have never owned an *authentic iconic* P-bass.
I have "almost authentic" P-types, USA built, traditional
construction, usually P-J. Yet, despite these NOT being
radical or modern designs, the differences vs a *real* 'P'
are distinct: Maple body, reversed P-PU, active EQ, etc
[altho not all piled onto any single example].

Anywho, when it comes to stuff that begs for a P-bass,
especially a *fretted* P-bass, I use StingRays. Crazy or
not, works for me. Actually, one of the pair isn't truly
exactly a StingRay, it's the Sterling version of the USA
built [early 2000's] S.U.B. Bass .... kinda half SR, half
Sterling. Cuts well without being brite or harsh, and it
has enuf "Leo Heritage" that it doesn't provoke any of
that "Fender Supremacist" prejudice ... such as I've
experienced with, frinstintz, my Steinberger.

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

Thanks for nothing. Now I have GAS (again) for a good P bass.
