Solo Ideas?

Steve Lawson and Gonzo can get you thinking out of the box right here.

Solo Ideas?

Postby GonzoBass » Thu Apr 18, 2013 10:39 am

Here's the deal.
During first run through rehearsal in an upbeat ragtime number,
there are band introductions;

They intro the drummer- He gets 4 bars unaccompanied
They intro the bass player - I get 4 bars accompanied (2 bars F major/2 bars G major)
They intro the guitar player - He gets 4 bars accompanied (He does licks)
They intro the sax player- He gets 4 bars accompanied (He pulls out the first 4 of "Popeye"!!!)*
and the intros continued on from there.

*Mental note to self: Hmm... way cool idea!

So, at this rehearsal I just walked up and down an octave higher
but after hearing the sax guy do his cool bit,
I am looking for any thoughts on a fun 4 bar theme I could use.

So far, I have "The Flintstones" which will fit.

Okay... "The Flintstones" it is
with an ear catching whole step modulation between phrases.
Eh, it works.
[smilie=confused-smiley-013.gif]

We've got tech rehearsal Wednesday, dress rehearsal Thursday
and then Friday/Saturday night shows
with a matinee on Sunday at 2:30.

...followed by my regular at 5:00,
which is gonna be tight since it's a two hour show!
Luckily Café Pesto is only a block away
(I'll leave one amp and take my combo).

Interesting song list:

That's Entertainment
Only a Bird in a Guilded Cage
I Love a Piano
The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai
Chattanooga Choo Choo
Nola
Smile/When You're Smiling (medley)
Tico Tico
Funeral March of the Marionettes (Alfred Hitchcock's Theme)
Foolish Memories
Alexander's Ragtime Band

Plus a few short play on/play offs:

Theme from I Love Lucy
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
"Chase Music"
"Snake Charmer Music"

and I sh!t you not, my list says:

"Steve Payton and Chiquita the Flying Chicken: (misc. improvisation)
where apparently he shoots a chicken out of a cannon...

It would be okay if Chiquita is baked in the process.
That has to be one of the strangest lists I have ever seen.

Well, now that I've actually seen it...

He comes out cradling a realistic chicken puppet
(his arm inside making the head move),
and after some comic banter gives the MC a large basket to catch Chiquita across the stage.
He then stuffs the chicken into a yellow cannon with an oversized plunger,
where after much fanfare and a drum roll,
an air cannon concealed inside launches a preloaded rubber chicken along with a bunch of feathers.
[smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

The MC holds up the rubber chicken...
Co-Host- "That's nasty"
MC- "That's chicken dinner"
Together- "THAT'S enterTAINment!"
*segue to finale number of "That's Entertainment"...

I couldn't make this stuff up.
[smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif]

Oh, our Director/MC Clay Calloway and his co-host "Janelle"-
