Blue Skies Chorus Question (Irving Berlin not ABB)

Steve Lawson and Gonzo can get you thinking out of the box right here.

Blue Skies Chorus Question (Irving Berlin not ABB)

Postby ampig » Thu Sep 05, 2013 12:35 pm

I play it: I, I6, IVm, I, IV, I, V, I
My wifes teacher says it's: I, I, IVm, I, IVm, I, V7, I
I have two fake books. It's not in either one so I figured I'd check to see if any of you guys know.

I can't see any right and not-right here.
It's all about interpretation, mood, etc.
A good tune ... a real tune ... is always
a living, growing, evolving thing, IOW,
not "married" to a signature set of riffs,
fingerings, special/alt tunings, yadaya.

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

When you say "chorus",
do you mean the first 8 bars?

If so,
here's what I have-

/ Im / ImMaj7 / Im7 / Im6 - bVI /
/ bIII - Im7 / IVm7 - bVII+7 / bIII / IIm7b5 - V7 /

We do it in Am
but if you let me know what key you're in,
I can get you a chart.

/ bIII / bVIm - bIII / bVIm - bIII / bVII7 - bIII /
/ bIII / bVIm - bIII / bVIm - bIII / IIm7b5 - V7 /

So in Gmin:

/ Bb / Ebm - Bb / Ebm - Bb / F7 - Bb /
/ Bb / Ebm - Bb / Ebm - Bb / Am7b5 - D7 /

However, as Golem said (in a way),
charts vary and are subject to interpretation, substitutions, etc.
so The First Rule of Music always applies.

...but I know that this form works well.
