As I'm not online every day [no access at home] I've
just encountered this for the 1st time. Despite the
exceeeedingly scary beginning, it seems things have
turned toward a good recovery. Here's hoping for a
totally good outcome !

From his wife....

The preliminary diagnosis for Gil Escalera is encephalopathy, an infection on the brain, brought on by the flu. This explains the confusion and such. He is much better today! Won't know for a while whether or not he'll be released today but it looks promising!

He posted that he was going to have a spinal tap yesterday, and appears to be on the mend. [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

[smilie=music-smiley-005.gif] HELLO BAD•ASS•BASS•PLAYERS! [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

It's been a long time. First of all, thank you all for your thoughts, love, concern and prayers. Here's a Summary of the events that took place:

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED?!

In a nutshell, what I thought was a sore throat and a cough turned out to be Influenza A. How I found this out was not fun.

Friday afternoon I was sitting outside in our backyard. Mary called me in for lunch from the kitchen – I didn’t respond. She yelled louder, still no response. She came outside and yelled at me – no response. She walked up to me a said “If you don’t answer me I’m calling 911.” I didn’t answer. She noticed I was unresponsive (not just ignoring her) and called 911.

The Fire Department and Paramedics arrived and began their assessment. All my vitals were normal but I was unable to respond. I was transported to the emergency center at San Antonio Regional Hospital in Upland where additional tests ascertained my vitals to be normal & stable, however I was still unresponsive. Without knowing what was going on they began running just about everything on me:
CT-Scan, MRI, EEG, EKG, X-Rays, Ultrasound, Blood Panels, Urinalysis, Nasal and Throat Culture Swabs and a Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap). All these tests found only one thing – the flu. The preliminary diagnosis was: encephalopathy, an infection on the brain brought on by the flu. [For the record, we got our flu shots in October or November; obviously this strain was not part of the vaccine.]

Although I was conscious, I was not able to effectively communicate with anyone for approximately 12 hours. I was in the hospital for 3 days. While there, they began me on a Tamiflu treatment as well as an antibiotic for pneumonia. I was sent home with a prescription for these meds as well as a rest order.

This is a basic summary of all that transpired, I left out most of the drama and detail as the entire ordeal was pretty scary. I can’t even imagine what Mary went through. The following 5 minute audio clip is of our good friend and pastor, Sam Scotti, as he shared with our Genesis church family on Sunday morning. I encourage you to listen to it for a little insight. -->
