Just sayin' hey

Postby bigfatbass » Mon Oct 03, 2016 3:31 pm

I know a bunch of you saw the posts on my facebag feed about the passing of my dear friend Dave Olson, and I just wanted to take a moment and send some love to my extended musical family.

Love to you all, savor EVERY moment. Really.

Years back, almost 10 years before I ever met Dave, I stole one of his grooves off a Robert Cray record and wrote a song around it. He was one of my heroes, along with Richard Cousins, and to me they were the epitome of the modern blues rhythm section. So tight, so groovy, so smooth, SO pwerful. Dave lived only about 20 minutes outside Syracuse, and our paths crossed musically here and there over the last 20 years or so. He was always gracious and gregarious, and truly one of those "nicest guy you'll ever meet" kinda guys. He met his wife on tour, and left a double grammy winning band to get married and have a family. He landed a good factory job he held for a long time, but eventually the plant shut down, and he took a job at Syracuse University in maintenance and physical plant, basically a skilled janitor job. He was humble beyond any description, and everything with Dave was about his wife Nancy and his 2 girls. His whole world was taking care of them. He still played a pretty good bit around the region, and when our regular drummer had some serious back issues we were lucky enough to have Dave agree to do some filling in. The day of the first full night with him behind the kit I could hardly contain my nerves. Tonight Dave Olson, DAVID FUCKING OLSON, is in MY band! When the moment came to actually play the tune with his groove on it, I said "This next one wasn't on your rehearsal list because I'm pretty sure you know how it goes, I lifted the groove from you!" He roared laughing and said "Stealin' my shit, huh?" I replied, "Yup, and you have to play with the thief right now".

One of the great moments of my life, musical or otherwise. Dave never treated anyone like anything other than a buddy, and any player like anything other than a peer. I will miss him and his amazing positive energy for the rest of my life. And good grief that man could play the drums.

We had a tribute jam in his honor last night and it ran non-stop for almost 5 hours. Every player for a 100 miles was in that little bar. There were many tears, but more laughs, and the music was transcendent. The most moving a performance by Mark Copani, a legendary fusion player from the 80s (Cabo Frio, most notably) who lives here in town, and was a long time running partner of Dave's. Mark is in the deep stages of parkinsons. His shuffling steps barely 6 inches a piece, but with a bunch of help he made it onto the stage, and managed to get a guitar on, and take a few passes. It was like someone flipped a switch. Fragile for sure, but he dug in, and burned it down. The house was floored. It was like in Willy Wonka where Gene Wilder falls down the stairs when greeting the winners, but rolls out of it with the grace of an acrobat. He played so hard, he set off a set of tremors that I could only describe as living hell. They rushed to get the guitar off him, and guide his once-again frail, quaking form off the stage back to his chair. There wasn't a dry eye in the house, and certainly not one in my office right now. This is why music. This is why.

Love you fuggers, go hug somebody.

Sounds like an epic send off, I really hate mortality for the people we love, life really is a gift that goes way too fast.

Thanks for that, I've been off in babyland and have not been in the gigging community in over a year. I needed to remember why we do it.

Big props for a monster player who had his priorities firmly where they should be: family and THEN music... What a great story, Steven:

One of the things that I really like about you, Steven, is that you appear to bring joy to your playing in all situations and venues. This story is further proof!

Cheers

There are a couple great little flashes of Dave in this vid of one of my favorite Cray tunes. Right around 1:50 you get the first shot of Dave's never-ending smile on stage.
