The 4th time may be the best yet!

Postby bigfatbass » Mon Nov 28, 2016 11:59 am

This past Saturday night I got to take the stage with the Levon Helm Studio Horns again, and play The Last Waltz in it's entirety, with an all star cast of regional heavy hitters and living legends. It is a massive labor of love for everyone involved, and the production team works miracles on a minute to minute basis. Levon's horns get invites to do this all over the country for big money. The first year they came to do it with us they turned down Jeff Tweedy, and I still can't believe they passed up that kind of money to hang with our gang again. I am humbled and honored that they like us so much. After weeks of pounding it together with my "The Band-mates", we do a full rehearsal all day working through the entire guest list on Friday, then get right back on stage again early Saturday afternoon and block it out with the horns, playing virtually the entire show 3 times in 24 hours. We get about a 2 hour break after horns to get our heads together and grab a bite, and BOOM hit the lights it's showtime. It is a simply brutal turn around that I don't really notice is happening until I get up Sunday morning and my legs feel like James Caan in Misery, lol. Wouldn't trade it for the world! The most terrifying part this year was a I had a nasty cold the beginning of the week and completely lost my voice. It was just starting to come back Friday, but I was doing very little talking and absolutely no singing. Our matriarch of the whole thing Stacey Waterman hooked me up with some Onondaga Nation Native "earth medicine tea" that smelled like a mint sewer about 20 minutes before we went on. I have no idea what was in it, the only thing she would reveal was that she starts with boiling up an entire box of throat coat in one pot. I sing the first 2 tunes of the night, and I literally had no idea what would be coming out of my mouth by the end of the 1st one, let alone #2. That stuff tasted worse than it smelled, and the instructions were NO water before you sing. She said "You gotta keep all that good greasy shit in there, don't wanna wash it down, friend". By the end of Cripple Creek my yodel was not "Lo-Hooooooooo", and more like "Lo. Hu.", but I made it. Throwing up my faith and thanks to our Earth Mother, and Mama Stacey. Here's the first half hour or so of the show from the house balcony cam, with just the camera for audio. The whole night was run discreet tracks to 3 redundant drives, and I think 5 video sources, and will be edited/mixed over the coming weeks.

Almost forgot the most important part. Early 2000's Squire P with a Lindy Fralin 5% over-wind 51'pick up. Bridge cover off pup cover on, Lake Placid blue, Streamliner 900 into a Genz-Benz cube from a Shuttle 6.0 Combo, and a matching Avatar cube 12 with a Kappa Pro underneath. Whole rig ways about 70lbs.
