'Tis the Season

Postby GonzoBass » Thu Dec 08, 2016 3:13 am

Lately in the bass/sax duo we've been doing swingin' versions of;

Frosty the Snowman
Here Comes Santa Claus
I'll Be Home for Christmas
Jingle Bells
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Silent Night (walking in 3/4 time... fun)
What Child is This? (AKA: Greensleeves, again in 3/4)
White Christmas

...and in a week I'll be backing a female singer,
so I'll have a few of these come up again
(but of course they'll be in her key this time [smilie=icon_rolleyes.gif] ),
plus she's added;

Blue Christmas
Please Come Home for Christmas
Santa Baby
What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?

They seem to put folks into the holiday spirit,
so the tip jar says.
[smilie=cool-smiley-031.gif]

Anyone else playing Christmas tunes?

Oy vey. Christmas tunes.

Yup. Playing quite a few the past coupla weeks. Almost all seem to be 1) In the key of C 2) The same "moderate" tempo 3) Trying to "jazz up" the tunes by adding alternate chords that are questionable at best.

Which can make for some loooong gigs. Maybe it's just the BL's versions of the songs he's acquired over the years? Dunno. Or maybe I'm just a Scrooge and should be grateful to have some nice, easy, good paying gigs and not complain?? [smilie=fun_84.gif]

Good for you both. [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]
I always thought C was an easy way to transcribe . . . if you were a keyboard player.

My fav is Christmas Time Is Here by Vince Guaraldi. How the melody and harmony fit together is genius.

My Grandma was a big Bing Crosby fan,
so White Christmas and I'll be Home for Christmas
both have special memories from my childhood.

[smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif] We always end the year with a lot of Christmas shows and I'm always amazed how much I have to relearn every year, I'm going senile! [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif]

No kidding! Yeah?!!!

I have to relearn tunes for my regular monthly gigs,
let alone these yearly tunes...

We did jingle bell rock but generally intentionally didn't book alot of gigs in December which is good cause the snow has been dumping down at my place... New years have a pub gig 2nd outing for my new x32 producer/turbosound PA.
