Alan Spenner

Working up "Jesus Christ Superstar" again here
and digging deeper into the CD tracks this time
to go beyond playing just the dummied-down written score.

Alan Spenner's lines are simply amazing!

Especially when you're looking at the chart.
I mean, he came up with THAT out of four simple bars of F to C...

...and ain't that a nice looking natural P he's holding?

I love Spenner's playing, the note choices on Roxy Music's Avalon album were superb. Not a wasted note on that album!

Thanks Jerry, I know you're a fan
and was hoping you'd chime in on this one.

I'll look that one up on Amazon.

Learning his lines has been quite a lesson for me these past few days.

I was discussing his playing with Nick in the car this afternoon
and I think the fact that Alan's playing is so effortless,
as opposed to rushing or forcing this many notes over these simple changes,
is the only thing that saves him from being accused of over playing.

Amazing.

...and gone far too soon at 43.

this is a year-old topic, i guess, but always nice to see a mention of alan spenner. aside from the amazing playing, i remember his sense of humor. i saw him a few times playing on his back -- just for laughs. he was a soulful, funky bass player. the UK"s answer to jamerson, rainey, weeks and the rest. i remember him using a blonde p-bass thru acoustic amp 'n' speakers. there's a CD by his band kokomo, called "to be cool," taken from an early '70s rehearsal tape, but it's exactly what he -- they -- sounded like at their best when they first got together.
