A true genuine, one of a kind.

I remember learning "For Whom the Bell Tolls" when it came out and thinking the intro was a guitar part, so I skipped it.
I had to go back and relearn it later after seeing Cliff do it live!
Tasty bass distortion.

...and I still smile when I hear "Bass solo, take one."

I'm so glad I got to see Cliff with Metallica when they opened for Ozzy in '86 just about a month before he died. A true head-bangin' monster if there ever was one. I believe he was the heart and soul of Metallica - incorporating a lot of the music theory and melody into their music. They were never the same after his passing. R.I.P. Cliff and thanks for the great music.

You hit it on the head man!

Cliff brought in the classical music theory! I took lessons from his 1st bass teacher Steven Doherty in Castro Valley. Part of steve's teaching is bach's cello suites amongst other classical stuff. Steve used to tell me that cliff geeked out on that stuff.

I've read and seen/heard interviews of the band about Cliff. He always would bring up the classical shit on the road. He'd want to bust out some classical artist tape to play on the bus/van.

I'm telling some of my students about him. Why is he so amazing? He brought the classic music theory to heavy metal. The other guys brought in the blues/rock/metal influence and what you have is truly amazing!

My 2nd music thory teacher at CSU Hayward brought in some short transcriptions of Metallica songs for us to prove some of the theories we were discussing and how modern bands are using them. Awesome stuff!

Cliff was my inspiration to play the bass. I was a big Metallica fan in high school, and had some classical training on the cello. One day I ran across a cd by a band called Apocalyptica, four cellists playing metallica covers. After listening to their stuff, I put on Anesthesia for a month solid and tried to learn it. Did pretty decent, but decided I HAD to get a bass.

Four and a half years and I've never looked back. RIP brother.

Cliff influenced me , STILL influences me, 20 years after his passing. I searched this forum and came up blank...can such a thing be?

here we go, im listening to his harmony bass soloing on 'orion' even at this moment. a fully pocket player who stepped out occasionally into the limelight, but never
ruined the band with any flashy tapping or slapping or any of that mumbo jumbo.

he has a myspace, i recommend all BABP's who play the cliff a tribute, join it, he's on my top 24 and always will be.

R.I.P.

Cliff was a really cool guy. Every Metalica show I went to (about 10) He always came out front and would hang out with the crowd. [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

Cliff Burton inspired me to play... Well, guitar first. About 5 or so years ago, I bought my very first Metallica album, "Ride the Lightning", and being someone who's never played or had the understanding of distortion, I thought the intro to "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was a guitar intro. It's a stupid and common mistake for those that don't know the difference with effects that enhance the instruments. A year later, I bought a cheap Yamaha guitar set. After months of trying to learn chords, I watched a video that shown Cliff play the intro and then I realized I picked up the wrong instrument. Another year or two passed, and that's when I got my first bass. It's because of Burton's intellect of musicianship that pulled me to the bass. I went in the wrong direction at first, but... in the end, I got in the right place.

Besides... I never could get use to those thin little strings, that just kept breaking.

Is this another parallel universe thread? He died way before 2006! Or maybe my trip to sector B-42 somehow altered the fabric of space upon my return?
