Firewire Recording Interface

Postby Cheap Bass Tard » Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:11 am

I've been using an M-Audio Solo for some time and the driver on it is a gigantic piece of fail. I use an intel iMac and Garage Band for recording (I'm not all that elegant).

My problem is that every once in a while, the audio driver for the M-Audio becomes corrupted and I have to uninstall and reinstall it. PITA

Anybody else with a Mac experience this problem. Oddly enough, the audio corruption seems to be caused by using the web browser. It's an intermittent failure, but I'm really sick and tired of the uninstall/reinstall merry-go-round.

Can anybody recommend a decent MIDI/Analog firewire interface for a Mac that doesn't have these problems?

Sorry, I've never had an issue with any M-Audio device plugged into a Mac. Have you checked any of the M-Audio forums for similar problems?

Steve -

Good idea, I'll check the forums.

I seem to be cursed as the only person I know who can screw up a mac.

Just got a new Mac laptop and I'm shopping for a medium priced audio interface. Any other suggestions besides M-Audio gear?

Thanks!

I would look at Focusrite or RME interfaces, M-audio doesn't have a good record with a lot of Mac users. RME has some of the best drivers but the interface itself, like the Babyface is a little pricey. The Focusrite Pro14 and Pro24 work well. I use a E-mu 1212m PCI card but I use a PC with Sonar. I was using a M-audio fast track, talk about noisy!

I've used the M-Audio stuff with no issues in the past but prefer the Presonus boxes.

As a matter of fact, I have a Presonus Firebox I no longer use that is in pristine condition that I'll let go for cheap if you're interested.

I use a Presonus tube preamp for recording, it seems like their stuff is pretty good.

The presonus firebox is what I use however I do have a presonus audio box as well (USB) that I use with my macbook. Both work well and sound good to my ears. If you decide to purchase a new unit, I would spend the extra few bucks and buy a Presonus Firepod - more room for the inevitable expansion as the disorder progresses [smilie=grinning-smiley-044.gif]
