DR Neons...

Postby harleyyy » Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:18 pm

I had a friend stop by to check out the GB heads, he had a Spector strung with a set of these, and I thought they sounded awesome and the coating feel is non-existent. They feel like a regular set of rounds. Sure, they're not for everyone, but I do have a few sets ( cool blue, red devil red, and back beauties) coming. [smilie=cool-smiley-031.gif]

I have plans to put some of these Neon strings on a couple of my basses. My OLP 5 string already has Red Devils on it, but I may change it to the Neon reds.

Extra Life Cool Blue. Right now, I like the more subtle variety than the neons. I have a couple sets of the Red Devils coming. So ya, I was confused because the neons aren't listed in the KMC catalog.

Thanks Rhi, I don't know know if the Neon is the same as the K3 coating. I can tell you they sound as good as any other DR round wound. I'm new at this coating thing, and curiosity got the better of me.
From the DR site...

The K3™ coating is the first coating that players report, “sounds as good or better than uncoated strings.” DR’s new, remarkable, proprietary and patent pending K3™ Technology Coating is the first coating that makes no apologies and no excuses for not delivering sound equal to uncoated strings. Players tell us that these strings have more volume, less unwanted overtones, greater clarity and articulation then standard, uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection due to corrosion and perspiration as well as increased tone life that coated strings are known for.

At DR Handmade Strings we always combine old fashioned craftsmanship with only the very finest American made materials.

So, on a normal passive Fender bass I'm assuming your hands won't ground the strings and there will be some buzz using these coated strings? I'm curious about these as it would certainly help with string life playing hot, humid outdoor gigs in the summer.

Yes, the newer NEONS are the K3. If you order off Amazon, you want to make sure you get the HD's. There are still some previous versions floating around out there and that coating was something supplied to DR by an outside vendor.

Just so you know, the underlying string is the SunBeam. So if you like the sound of that string, you will be right at home with the NEONs. I had been playing Dean Markley SR2000 exposed core (The old Will Lee Signatures), since they came out. I felt it was time for a change and with as many outdoor gigs I am doing, I wanted a coated string to help extend the life. The coating on these work well. I live in Florida and have played several gigs in the humidity, sweating, and one on the beach at night with moisture settling on everything. They have lived up to my expectations so far.

I also have a Tobias Classic 5 fretless and they really woke up that bass. Originally, I had the SR2000s on it. Didn't like it. Went to the DR flat wound and I like that setup for an old vintage-ish upright sound. But for rock gigs that doesn't work to well. The NEONs have been a delightful change and that bass is now coming with me to all my gigs.

I like the Black Beauties on some of my basses and not on others. I have also tried the orange neon ones but I didn't like them on the bass that I tried them on. I'm told they sound similar to the black beauties but I couldn't tell on the bass they were one. But I can tell you they look BRIGHT. [smilie=grinning-smiley-044.gif]
