How much difference do cables REALLY make?

Postby Cheap Bass Tard » Sat Apr 21, 2012 9:57 am

Being a bit of an audiophile (within reason) I'm a bit skeptical of all these outrageous claims made by cable makers.

I've been using Butch's outstanding Bayou cables for a while and the value can't be beat IMO. I also use Hosa interconnects for my pedals.

However, I've seen Lava and Spectraflex and all other kinds of stuff here on BABP and was wondering if I could get some real experience from you road dogs. I suspect in a live setting, the improvement in sound from a cable more costly than what Butch makes might be very small. I believe it might be noticeable in a recording studio - but again I've not done any listening for myself.

So, outside of having something that is reliable, has tight connectors that don't "crackle", is free of microphonics, and doesn't suffer from ridiculously high capacitance (although not really an issue since 90% of the time I use an active bass) are those $90 cables worth the extra money?

PS I'll go on record her to say I don't care for Monster products and I think their stuff is overpriced/overrated so let's leave them out of the discussion.

I stood next to my amp while my guitarist stood in front of me with his (then newly released) George L
and did a quick switch, A/B back and forth with my generic cable while I played.

This difference was dramatic enough that I went and bought a couple the next day
(one long for big stages and one short for smaller venues)
and have been using them ever since.

...the same ones actually.

I have been using my bayou for a very long time, still works great. Never did a compare, but I have a few of the spectraflex I got from Wymore and a really nice zzyvx that I use for recording.

I think it's important to use a well made good cable that will take some abuse, other than that I can't really tell the difference, but my hearing probably isn't what it used to be either. [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif]

I use my George Ls in the studio, I really can hear a difference on the take. Live, I use whatever is in my bag. I've learned that even if I can hear the difference, the people buying the beer can't. I haven't yet tried the Lava cables, but I'm damn sure willing to try 'em.
