I had one for a couple of years, in 10-string standard tuning. I could never get comfortable with the way the courses are tuned. Couldn't get happy with what I was able to do on either course, and one would suffer if I put too much emphasis on the other. I'd love to have the SB-8 Stick Bass, though.

Thanks Mike, Do you think that the problem you had is not having a piano players brain, also i wonder why you said you would still like an 8 string stick, as that is the one, if ever I was in the position to own one, that I would pick, tuned low b to b flat across the board.

You know, I think playing a piano is easier...at least the tunings are the same for the left and right hands! Actually, though, what I think made it tough for me is that I already played bass and guitar and I was accustomed to how those are set up. For me, anyway, it's easier to learn something from scratch than to have to forget something you've already learned.

The reason I think I could work with an SB-8 is that it's standard 4ths tuning.

Well this is the SB 8, now I'll find out if im as smart as I think im not ! this is going to be a punishing time, as the relearning and ignoring old ways of playing, thinking outside the box is whats needed here, great tone, im setting it up and sorting out the playability as a way of getting to know it and understand the tapping concept. at least it stops me going down the pub.

I used to have an early '80s 10 string Brazilian ironwood Stick. Back around 1992 I took a week-long seminar at a National Summer Guitar Workshop camp and met Emmitt Chapman. He took a look at my Stick and offered to update it to his latest specifications for a very reasonable amount of money. When I got it back it played and sounded so much better. At the same seminar I got a wild hair and bought a second Stick from a fellow student; this one was a white polycarbonate one. Both Sticks were in standard Stick tuning. A few years later I couldn't justify having two Sticks, so I sold the polycarbonate one for a good price at the time. I got pretty decent at playing the riff from "Elephant Talk" and other things, but as the years passed I could not give the Stick the playing time it deserved. About three years ago I sold it on eBay.

I still find myself playing a lot of tapping riffs on bass, so I might want to see about going back to using a Chapman Stick.
