Does anyone know where the green mahogany ASAT is?

Postby bdgotoh » Fri Sep 04, 2009 3:14 pm

This bass was in ASATman's possesion last time I heard about it, at least that's what I remember. It was a super light mahogany-bodied ASAT in greenburst with a solid mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard with two dots at the 12th fret only. Frankensteinberger had it for awhile and it was the only ASAT that I've ever been tempted to buy. I ran across some pics of it the other day and wondered where it is.

I remember that bass, but not it's current owner. Even the casual bass player never forgets a stunner like that!

I don't know if anyone still cares three years later... but I ran across this thread in a search. The greenburst mahogany ASAT is the only keeper I have left. (Not currently for sale. :)) ..and it's still the Holy Grail bass for me.

Hey Mike, any chance you can post a pic. It would be nice to see it again, lol

Hope you guys weren't in a hurry... I FINALLY had time, remembered and had decent light at the same moment, so as promised long ago... Here are some pics of my most favorite of all basses. Couldn't locate my camera, but this baby has a magic that comes through even in cellphone shots.

It's even better in person! The finish over the mahogany is just miles deep...

That's quite beautiful. I love mahogany. How much does it weigh?

Y'know? I've never actually weighed it, but it's light. I'd guess it at around 8.5 lbs, maybe a shade under. The guys at G&L tell me there's virtually no way that the body is chambered, but i SWEAR it sounds like it has voids in the upper bout and the bridge end opposite the control cavity, by way of the scientific thump test.

Too bad they don't offer mahogany as a body wood option anymore.

The right store might be able to get them to, though most of the staff over there has changed so I don't know how flexible they are these days. I had a deal with them when I had guitar man that they would do mahogany basses for me but only if they had wood that they felt wasn't too heavy. They did a number of L2000s for me over a couple of years but they ran out of lighter weight mahogany and wouldn't do anymore. You might talk to a smaller store and see if they can get anywhere with G&L.
