Wellll...This thing has gotten worse. I've been doing my own set ups for 20 years. There's something up.

G string saddle is almost bottomed out. Action at the 12th fret is pretty darn high. I've got, IMO, the proper amount of relief in the neck. Buzzing on the frets above the 12th fret. E string buzzes the whole length of the fingerboard.

Any suggestions? Never had to work this hard on a setup. Do not want to take it somewhere to get worked on. Help!

Like Karl mentioned, don't be afraid to shim.

Which may explain the quick return to Bass San Diego from the original buyer. You might invest in a phone call to them.

Update: Talked to Chris at Bass San Diego. SUPER nice guy to deal with. End result it's going back.

I feel pretty stupid about this, but IMO there's something not right. And I just don't see going to a local tech about this seeing as it's a new bass and I'm more than capable of doing a basic setup on a bass.

Anyhoo.....Back to the ol' drawing board!! [smilie=fun_84.gif]

No need to feel bad or stupid about it. If anyone should, it should be Bass San Diego. The instrument should have been gone over with a fine-tooth comb when he got it back the first time rather than just flip it. Hell, it might not have passed inspection when they received it from G&L. Slammed saddles are worth investigating.

I think you deserve some slack on this one.

Of course now I'm paranoid that it's just me and that they'll get the bass back and it'll play perfect. Or they'll just make a couple of quick adjustments and it'll be "buttah".

I know exactly how you feel. I recently ordered two new G&Ls, an L1005 and an L1000. The 5er was a dream to play, perfect in every way. The 4 string buzzed all over the fretboard on every string while playing and the A string buzzed at the nut when played open. I tried to set it up but nothing helped. I contacted my dealer and sent it to the factory. It took 3+ weeks but it came back with a new nut and it's now buzz-free and plays and sounds great.

Don't be. If the bass ain't right, it ain't right.

You've owned..... well, let's just say you have extensive ownership experience. [smilie=icon_biggrin.gif] You know what's right & what's wrong. Based on your description, I think it needs to go back to Fullerton. Maybe Bass San Diego can straighten out its issues, but it doesn't matter either way. Other than allowing a bass to acclimate and maybe a minor tweak, it should be playable out of the box. This one wasn't. Not your fault.

Like Sinatra says "Thaz life ... ". Had a similar failed adventure
just yesterday. Involved 30 yr old MB diesel thaz been sitting still
for many months, up on a mountain top, in the freezing weather.
That adventure also went just like Frankie said.

Tomorrow or very soon there will be something else to sneak past
the wife and the dogs. Do you know she has them scent trained to
detect newly arrived basses ? Yes, she does ...

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

Oh, I know how that goes. And we don't even have a dog. Just blabber-mouth kids.

True story; When the boy was younger and home all/most of the day and I was bass slutting more often, The WIfe'd ask the boy if any new packages came that day after she got home from work. Little bugger'd rat me out very time. Me! His Old Man! Why I oughta... [smilie=angry-smiley-005.gif]

And who here said something like "The new gear arrives so often the dogs don't even bark at the UPS driver anymore." I like that one. And have quoted it often.
