Update: It's here! Got it on the day of my last post.

Beautiful finish! Rosewood board is also quite handsome! Great tone. Nice weight. Balances nice. Even looks to have a quartersawn neck! And you guys were right about the #12 neck. Very comfy. I really like the string spacing, both at the nut and over the pickups. My hands don't feel "crowded". Came through NYE's gig with no issues. Recorded the bass, too. Set one was neck pickup/series/passive. Set two was both pickups/series/passive. Set three was bridge pickup/series/passive. I'll listen later today to adjust pickup height and to hear differences in tones.

But here's my complaint. The neck seems to be set too deep in the neck pocket. I'm allllmost maxed out on the G string saddle as far as lowering it. And I'd like to add just a hair of relief to the neck and then lower the string height but don't think I'll be able to do it without a shim. Anybody else ever have this issue?

Pics or it doesn't exist. But you know that. Congrats on this imaginary bass.

A shim might be needed, but I'd recommend you let the bass acclimate to your environment before making any major setup adjustments. A little trussrod here, a little saddle height there is okay, but I'd hold off a shim for at least a week.

I agree with Ken, give it at least a week before you do a shim. I find humidity really affects basses I buy in the wintertime. I have to shim about I/3 of the G&L basses I buy, I'm pretty used to it by now.

Brad and Ken, thanks for the advice!! I'll follow it.

BTW, did quick listen to last night's NYE gig. Besides me (somehow) not getting the last set (bridge pickup soloed/series/passive) I can tell a couple of things. 1) Neck pickup volume/height needs to come up. 2) Bass sounds great in the mix! DAMN!!

Odd... Most people want to lower the pickups because they're so hot. Cool!

I notice that you're working passive a lot. If you're not already, you might consider keeping cable length to 10 - 12 feet to avoid passive tone suck. An alternative would be to have a pedal or some-such in the signal chain that presents a low impedance to your amp, after which you can go long.

The G&L preamp does very little tone shaping other than a tiny treble bump when active (or a bigger treble bump when active with treble boost). It's pretty transparent. Its big claim to fame is to present that low impedance to the amp - even with a long cable.

Oh! And how about some pics?

I'll get to some pics.

One perc of the color of this bass is it's sort of close-ish to my gold Scheff. Hopefully The Wife won't catch on as quickly as usual to my latest acquisition due to the similarity of the colors. The Wife is home today from work. So maybe this weekend or more likely Monday. Don't want her seeing me photographing basses. That's a sure giveaway.

`

Shimming is a fairly typical aspect of personal set up,
nothing to be alarmed about. I agree about waiting a
week or more, not cuz a week might undo the need of
shimming ... if you think you need it, you need it. The
week or more of acclimatization is so that WHEN you
do the shimming, you don't hafta re-do it after the ax
settles into its new living conditions.

I haven't picked up a new G&L in about 4 years now but I seem to recall we had to shim the necks on a fairly high percentage of the bases and guitars that came into the store the last couple of years I was involved with it. I am inclined to say it was about 50%. It's really not a big deal and you'd be amazed at the number of instruments from all manufacturers that arrive with shims from the factory.
