My L2KE - Sacrilege?

Postby ampig » Sun Mar 08, 2015 3:41 pm

I've got an 81 L2KE. I've had it about 4 years. She's a great player but the trans red finish is badly chipped off on most of the upper bout and It drives my OCD crazy. I like the bass, but in order to keep it, I'll have to refinish it. One part of me says that it would be blasphemous and just a general mistake to do a refin. That sometime down the road, L2KE's will be worth big money and should be left all original. my other option is to sell it and find another in closer to mint condition. What do you guys think?

I'm from the mindset that a bass is a tool and you want your tools to function the best they can be, but they're just tools. Of course, I wouldn't think of refinishing a 58 precision, but an 80's bass? if it's a player, go for it. I'm sure collectors/dealers will have a different take on it, but if I have a bass that is one of my go-to basses and I want to enjoy playing it for a long time, I wouldln't hesitate to refinish a bass If i felt llike it's what i wanted to do.

Personally, I Can't understand the people that trade basses like baseball cards. but I'm sure my curmudgeon streak is showing.

As bad as I hate it, I doubt G&Ls will ever have any real collector value. They've just not gotten enough exposure in the general marketplace, and not nearly enough big names playing them. I'd say if you like the bass, do what makes you happy.

If it's a player and a keeper, do what you need to do to it. I've done everything to my El Toro you're not supposed - it's been refretted and I changed the tuners to Hipshots. Yes, I've destroyed any collectibility but as a player it blows away most G&Ls from the same era.

`

Don't recall whether my L2K-e is '81 or '82. It's
a slot pole .... and it's a FL, one of my earliest
adventures in FL and so all the notes are very
casually indicated in sloppy permanent marker.

Altho it's collectability is no issue, I may fix up
the messy markings, just cuz it's my handiwork
and I really can do it much better. But restore
it to original ? WTF for ? Nobody even knows or
cares what a GnL is, or who GnL is [except for
a small circle of friends ... ]

Hey ! I've got a one-off Alvarez show prototype
and I can't figger out which is LESS collectible:
the Alvarez or the L2K-e :-/

`

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

I'm pretty sure by that time, we'll all be back to ashes and/or dust...

Would still like to see it.

I'm gonna reluctantly agree with the consensus here. IF you have no plans to get rid of it, do whatever you like. If not, ...well, it's still kinda up to you. As much as I'd love for them (and mine) to skyrocket in value, they just don't seem to be destined for that, and that's a real shame when compared to "other" basses of that era. I let my '81 get away from me once, and I don't intend to let that happen again. It's a monster.

I could see doing a nice refin if its a player. Those paint chips can be sharp on the underside of your forearm.
