ASAT BASS Pickguard?

Postby ASATMAN » Tue Apr 01, 2008 7:05 am

I have a wild hair that needs to be tamed. I wonder if a Fender Esquire style pickguard would fit [except neck pocket] an ASAT bass. Anybody have an Esquire pg they could trace for me? Thinking a pg without holes and applied with a light spray adhesive [so it's reversable] could look cool.
Your thoughts?

Dan

I prefer naked bodies myself. I almost wish MM and Fender woudl give us the option of no pickguards. My new teal Sterling HS just arrived, and it looks great naked, except for the PG mounting screw holes. Whats with fender? It looks like they top route from the pickup area now to the control section, so removing a guard or applying a "clear" guard looks like a home made bass.

Jimi

Do anyone knoiw where to get fancy screws? Something with a Star head or other adornment?

Check with Butch on the screws. He has a lot of sources.

Just paint the current screws to match the bass. Use the little touch up bottles from the auto parts place.

Or you could fill the holes with something like softwood and use that same touch up paint to touch that up. After all, if you ever actually use the holes again, then the PG will hide your fill-and-touch-up work.

Personally, while I generally prefer basses without PGs, there's something about the oval PG on a 4-string MM that sets it apart. The 5-string MM ? Well if'n y'can't say nuthin nice, best to say nuthin at all :-/

`

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

Not too bad, but will require careful fitting for the horn.

You may consider light tack, double side tape for mounting the pg.

Lemme know if you will want a tracing. Jamie

BTW, think the bridge plate notch on the pickguard would look good fitted to the neck PU.

The black pickguard is a Chandler.

Wow, thanks Jamie! [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif] I think that looks pretty good. It will take a little work and I was wondering about the half round Tele control plate cut out. Think I'd leave that out and have it run straight down. If you don't mind tracing it would be greatly appreciated. I'll trasfer it to thin wood so I can trim as needed. Looking at a 1 or 2 ply pg with pearloid top. Spray mount should work. I want to make it reversible.
Please let me know how I can return the favor.

Dan,

What color finish is your ASAT?

Pearloid will look great.

I'll get a tracing in the mail tomorrow.

It's the only ASAT I have left. 1999 custom ordered silver metalic w/ matching headstock, white binding, front and back. You might remember this pic. The bass on the far right. The binding is really an off white. So if I go 2 ply that color for the base and cream [or maybe white] pearloid top. I'll be sure to keep you posted on the results.
Thanks for your help,
Dan
