How to make this look better .......

Postby aussiemark » Thu May 07, 2009 4:31 pm

I've got this circa 1998-2001 Stingray incoming at the moment, and the previous owner had some stickers on the headstock and also played in a lot of smoky bars. So, when the stickers were removed for sale, the headstock is baby-ass white underneath. Now I don't mind mojo and playing wear, but this looks a little goofy. Any thoughts on how I might be able to yellow the white patches to match the rest of the headstock?

I kinda like it!

I remember reading somewhere about a way to age clear poly like that...I'll try to run it down. I imagine you'd have to tape off the yellowed areas though.

I'd guess the first thing you'd have to decide would be,
are you going to try to:
a) Make the sticker areas darker
b) Make the rest of the headstock lighter

I think trying to darken those small areas to even reasonably match the rest would be rough.

Other than the obvious of strip and refinish the face,
try a noncaustic cleaner to remove the darker stain?
It should just be on the suface.
No?

My Mrs. soaks her car ashtray in vinegar once in a while
and it removes that nasty tar build up.
So maybe a wipe of that applied with some elbow grease?

You might also be surprised what all WD-40 will remove.

Yeah, as a desperate move,
maybe wipe it with peroxide and leave in the sun to bleach it?
...but I would be afraid of everything getting lighter evenly
which brings you back to where you started.
Only lighter!

Uh, these are just suggestions though.
I don't want to be responsible if any of these mucks it all up...

Start smoking and exhale on the headstock. Or lend it to someone who's a heavy smoker. I'm not kidding.

It's really not that old--I would give it a month or so, now that the stickers are off. The light spots may darken quicker than you expect. I've had less extreme examples even up pretty quickly, once the air has time to work on the finish. Like pulling a bandaid off of your finger after it's been on there a few days.

By the way, here the rest of the bass. And yes, it will definitely match some of my shirts, ideal for the SNF part of our show [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Paging Ms. Froover--something in metallic grape for you to see! That's great, Mark--if you ever want to send the neck to SW Florida to even up its tan, please make sure that it's accompanied by its body.
