Ouch! Plugged into bad power! Opinions..

Postby nolabass » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:35 am

A while back I ran sound for a friend and plugged into bad power. I have no idea if it was 220 or 110 or what but it was bad.... I was told after the fact. The outlet looked like 110, the gear worked for a moment so I walked away. The board, a Mackie/Berhinger clone started smoking, so I shut things down. Now I have a board that shuts down after a few minutes, still works but has issues and a main speaker that for some reason the tweeter is out. Don't know if that is related or not.

OK....so question is:
-I figure the power supply is shot on the board....... is a $240 new Behringer worth the bench cost to check and fix?

-is the tweeter loss a result of voltage weirdness or is the crossover toast? It'll be worth the bench cost here as it is a TurboSound.

I have been $$ tight this year so fixes and repairs are backing up on me. Trying to prioritize what gets fixed. But right now I have no board and only monitors if I need PA.

I carry one of these in my gig bag, but really need to use it more.

I've been meaning to purchase a 25 foot extension cord with a 3-way socket on the end. When I do I think I'll just leave that power tester Harleyyy posted above plugged into it at all times. I forget to use mine too, but if I have it already plugged in, it's harder to ignore and I still have one outlet for my amp and one for my effects.

It's probably just the power supply. $27 at Full Compass

This one has it's own power supply. Model XENYX1222 ..... a $220 item. Worth fixing?

Get an estimate before committing to the job. I had that same board, it's worth what you paid for it. [smilie=cool-smiley-031.gif]
I would think that paying up to $100 for the repair would be worth it. I just got a smaller Xenix with the outboard power supply. They are very good mixers.
