Piezo to Bass Amp: DI? Newbie Content...

Postby Sloom » Tue May 18, 2010 8:07 pm

Yep, newb. The question is: How can I get the signal from my Barcus-Berry 3150 to line level without the preamp? I want to go into either an AMP BH-420 or a Trace Elliot 250SMX bass head... it's what I got... into a Bag End S15-D. I can use the eq on the amp to set aright whatever issues I may have. I'm only new at it, but am going to accompany my kid at her violin recital ("Summertime", by Gershwin/Heyward- we're actually getting pretty good!). I need something better and less noisy than my little Yamaha utility-mixer.

Passive DI? Cheap pre I can get away with that is pretty quiet? Any helpful hints'd be appreciated, thanks!

I use an HPF-Pre. It has an adjustable filter to keep the bass from feeding back on the low end. Simple and effective.

Your bass pickup directly into your amp may work okay...maybe not. The reason you need a preamp is not always just to get the signal up to a good level....it's because the piezo pickups need a pre with a really high input impedance...usually around 1 MegOhm. If your amp's input impedance is too low, your bass will sound thin, and have no bottom.

Here's a link from Bob Gollihur's site (All Hail!) which explains:
