My latest: 74 Jazz

Older is better here. If Kebo has to explain, you wouldn't understand.

My latest: 74 Jazz

Postby Shakey Slim » Wed Mar 18, 2009 9:15 am

Just picked this one up last night. 74 Jazz, original Mocha finish, bound rosewood board w/ blocks defretted [smilie=coz.gif] . No neck stamp (except for "J. Torres"), pots date to 73, solders look original, grey bobbin pickups. I should be getting the original ashtrays this week.

The plan is to have it refretted, if it can be done right.

I'm pretty stoked about it! It's actually lighter than my MIJ Jazz, and sounds twice as large.

I'll check with Mr. Dolan on the refret.

Cool bass Slim... another vote of confidence for Michael Dolan. He's my first choice for repairs or custom builds... in fact he's working on a "Franken-Fender" Jazz for me at this moment... refin & stack-pot conversion.

Found it on consignment at a local shop. Story is it belonged to a local country player who had recently passed, and the family is selling off his equipment.

Now why in the world would you want to go and add all that useless metal to such a nice bass?

Got the bass back on Monday. Had it refretted by Darrin Huff (Dhuff Guitars). He did a fantastic job, BTW.

OK, I get it now. Older Fenders just sound BETTER! This thing has a full, thick, clear, bright, "3D" quality of sound I've never come across in all of the basses I've owned (and I've gone through a lot of basses!).

What more can I say about it? I haven't put it down since Monday.
