Bass Playing Goals for 2011

Postby Cheap Bass Tard » Wed Jan 05, 2011 9:41 am

Thought it might be fun to start a thread and then revisit it this coming December. So list maybe 5 major goals for this year.

1) Clean up my slap technique on the 5-string so I can ditch my 4-bangers (muting, hit open E without the B-string ringing, etc...)
2) Incorporate more open strings in my playing to facilitate easy position shifts
3) Learn to use harmonics to outline chord tones for as many chords as possible
4) Work on my fretless intonation/playing to the point where I would be comfortable bringing it to a gig
5) Practice singing and playing at the same time to make myself more marketable as a player

Those are all excellent goals.

My overal music goal really is to become better at capturing music and better at producing/mixing.

My bass goal for 2011, to play live at some sort of event, maybe even join a group.

I am going to work more on singing. I have a tendancy to drop or hold bass notes when I sing. Practice practice practice.

I am also going to work more on my seat of the pants "ear" playing by playing at the various blues/jazz jams around town. I do this now but I will be trying to get out more frequently.

Stop sucking at playing arco.
A bad day of playing bass is still better than a good day of playing cello.

+1 on that goal. Lead vocalists are a royal pain in the butt. They never help with load in/load out, they act like prima donnas, they're constantly trying to turn up their mic mixes so all you hear is their voice with the band providing soft background music, and they get the same cut as the rest of us. Singing bassists are like the holy grail. I need to learn to sing, play bass, do both while maintaining a groove and, the part that I suck at the most, harmonizing with the other singing musicians.

Practicing my URB is another goal. I've been a bad boy when it comes to playing my doghouse.

LOL!! I'll one-up you: I want to stop sucking at bass playing!!

Goals:
1) Get giggable on upright.
2) Get a new gig (in addition to my current main gig).

That's pretty much it!

I've got about a half dozen
good ideas I'm working on:

1. Get more gigs.
2. Get more gigs.
3. Get more gigs.
4. Get more gigs.
5. Get more gigs.
6. Get more gigs.

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

While all of the above mentioned goals are great and I could benefit from all of them....Golem summed it up for me. I walked away from playing tow years ago and from a great band. It was something I needed to do at the time and for the most of the past two years I have not missed playing. But I finally have the itch again and cannot wait to land my first gig of 2011. Here's to all of you and hoping for lots of gigs for the BABP'ers this year.

so we're a little past the mid-point ... how all y'all doin' on your goals so far?

mine were to get myself back to where I was comfy playing pizz & arco (elec upright) in a live setting, and to get my plucking hand (elec) into shape so that I am consistent sonically with each finger

- solid success on my pizz, and three successful gigs at large venues here in Seattle

- so-so success on my arco, with two gigs where I was reasonably comfy. I ditched the arco for our gig this past weekend due to just not feeling it at sound check or the practice session earlier in the day

- reasonable success on the plucking technique based on last month's studio session, but I still have a couple bad habits to eliminate. what sucks is that these only came about after taking two years off to focus on building, and then getting a gig with almost no time to get back into shape ... let a rat into the pantry and spend forever trying to get it out [smilie=fun_84.gif]

all the best,

R
