Demo Tracks Test Request

Postby GonzoBass » Sat Feb 26, 2011 4:27 am

I just uploaded some "JazzX2" demo tracks with the new guitarist-

ReverbNation/JazzX2

If you have a few minutes,
would you mind giving them a listen
and letting me know what you think of the sound quality on your system as far as volume/mix?

They are all under 3 minutes each.

Also, any critique on the song order would really be appreciated
(since I can only list six out of the eight titles on the main page).

Thanks guys!

First of all: [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif] and [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

Nice playing Gonz!! Great tone! And I dig your version of Waiting In Vain!!

Now I'll give my $.02. Take it for what it's worth. (And it's only worth about $.02!)
--I thought that there's too much reverb (delay?) on the guitard.
--And it's going to sound funny coming from a bass player, but I thought your bass was a smidgen too high in the mix. I mean, just baaaaarely move the volume knob on the bass track down.

And your'e definitely a BadAss!!
I don't know and I don't care,

Nice work Gonz!
I agree too much reverb on the guitar . . . . particularly on Take 5 . I think his chops are nice and crisp and the reverb takes something away from him.
don't know what you playing through but it is damn nice man.
Fairly decent logitec speakers tried at low and high vols.
Your cut on Europa made me want to grab a beer and look at the ocean :)

Thanks for taking the time to listen guys.
I really appreciate it!
[smilie=food-smiley-004.gif]

This was done with my Tascam on a tripod between our two amps.
So in essence, it's a live digital boombox recording
and there's very little I can do as far as the "mix" goes,
except compress the Hell out of it, f@#k with the frequencies and the overall volume.

My goal was trying to get levels that would satisfy all end users;
lap top speakers, iPod earbuds, external comp speakers, stereo...
and the bitch was that by the time I had enough bass to register on the laptop,
it was woofy as Hell on my stereo.
So all I could do was aim for a happy medium.
[smilie=confused-smiley-013.gif]

The last thing I wanted was for the booking agent to reach for his volume to turn it down...

As far as the playing goes,
thanks
but I'm less than proud of it when I listen back.

We needed to get a product out ASAP
so this was rush recorded in the guitar's livingroom
(in about 2-3 hours, starting at 8:30 in the morning)
after only a couple weeks of us playing together
and before we really had a chance to gel musically.

I hear the warts,
all the tempos seem rushed to me
(I blame this on Trever's "Jet Fuel" coffee that morning... [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif] ),
plus the fact that both "Satin Doll" and "Fly Me to the Moon" have the same ending
[smilie=icon_rolleyes.gif]
(which we've since solved live).

It is what it is though and it's done now.
The mp3s are posted, the link's been sent,
the CDs are burned and the packages go out on Monday.

Fingers crossed...

Thanks again guys!!!

Thanks again guys!

For me though,
it's Trever's solo on "Something" that I can listen too again.
Sounds real accurate to me...

Not to brag here or anything,
but did I mention that he teaches music at the Unversity of Hawaii Hilo campus?
[smilie=cool-smiley-031.gif]

How about the fact that he hasn't been late once?
(in fact he shows up about when I do!)

Has been picking up a new tune a week with me?
(with no rehearsal!)

His birthday is September 13 and mine is September 12
and we both have six year old daughters born about a month apart?
(same "Virgo mellow" attitude/same "family man" work ethic!)

How about the fact that he pe plays a Steinberger M Series?
(been jokingly calling ourselves "The Headless Jazzmen" [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif] )

Shyeah!
It all seems too good to be true to me at times.
Like I'm either gonna wake up
or the other shoe's gonna drop.

Good stuff Gonz! [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

I had it playing in the background last night, but will take the time to listen and comment on later.

From what I heard though.... Good stuff! [smilie=grinning-smiley-003.gif]

Real nice work. You're out there on an island when there's no drummer. I like the reverb. I'm over these modern cats using chorus effects on straight ahead jazz guitar.
