Need Some New Tune Ideas

Postby GonzoBass » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:26 am

The "Jazz x2" song list is lopsided with too many minor, slow tunes.

We're looking to add a few more upbeat or uptempo numbers to our set of standards/mellow covers,
preferably some in a major key.

I've come up with a few;
St. Thomas, I Just Called to Say I Love You, Four, Breezin' ...

You guys have any suggestions from your song lists?

Here's our short list-

All Blues
Autumn Leaves
Bb Blues
Black Orpheus
Black Magic Woman
Blue Bossa
Blue In Green/So What
Blue Monk
Blue Skies
Blue Trane
Chameleon
Equinox
Europa
Fever
Fly Me to the Moon
Girl From Ipanema
Green Onions
Island Style
King of the Road
Little Sunflower
Little Wing
Money Song
Moondance
Mr. PC
My Funny Valentine
On Broadway
Over the Rainbow
'Round Midnight
Satin Doll
Sleepwalk
Something
Stir It Up
Stormy Monday
Summertime
Take Five
Tequila
Thrill is Gone
Waiting in Vain

Gonz,
We "lightened up" our set at restaurants by injecting some Beatle tunes. Good changes and the crowd actually recognizes them. We just call them out of a Beatles fake book.

My first instinct is to look towards NOLA jazz artist. I am struck with how many cool tunes are local standards. Look at the Marcellis family for tunes.. Dr. Michael White as well. I do simple Amazon searches and check out the samples for tunes....

http://www.amazon.com/Standards-Ballads ... pd_sim_m_7

and I still love the Vince Guaraldi stuff....peanuts sound tracks made a huge impact on my ear for jazz.

Check out Louis Jordan's catalog. Some great uptempo tunes there.

I've covered "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby" in the past
but had no idea where it came from or the history of Louis Jordan-

Caldonia is the song that came to mind. Saturday night fish fry would translate well too I think.

LOL@ Golem - for suggesting St James Infirmary which is a great tune that should be on your list, but probibly one of the slowest, most minor tunes ever, for all of history.

The live version is my favorite and a bit faster:

Some slow tunes are just sad and draggy, but others, and I'd incl St James Infirmary,
leave room for ... and invite ... plenty of cool riffing, which give them a sorta snappy
popular appeal even tho the actual tempo may be way slow.

Anywho, tempo is flexible ... it's up to the band. It doesn't hafta be like Paul Robeson
doing Let My People Go. I've gotta admit, there's some tunes that Ms Diva favors in
the Diva Duo that I've just declared to be solo songs ... just Ms D on vox & KB ... cuz
I just can't really play THAT slooooooowwwww .....

One good trick to rearranging a jazz standard without ruining the melody is using Maj6ths in place of minor 7ths. i'll start with Autumn Leaves in the key of G. The real book shows the first 12 measures as Amin7, Amin7, D7, GMaj7, CMaj7, F#min7b5, B7, Emin, Emin, B7, Emin, Emin.

Rearranged: Cmaj6, Cmaj6, D7,GMaj7, CMaj7, Amaj6b3, B7, GMaj6,GMaj6,B7, GMaj6, Gmaj6.

The Relative Minor7th is a Maj6th or 4 frets down from the minor is a Major 6th. They share the same notes. Hope this helps with autumn leaves. If you need help with more just ask.I would be happy to help.

I realized I misread your post, lol. I thouht you were looking to change some of the slow sad standards and rearrange them with more of a upbeat sound. my bad. I do have the real and fake books laying around I will look and find some tunes that move.
