According to the full page ad in the newest MF catalog I got in the mail (April 2013 w/Richie Sambora on the cover) Gibson is claiming it's, "The best of both worlds".

Meh, on the looks.
... and it'd need at least one more fret.

To what worlds they are referring, we will never know.

Clearly they mean it's a cross between a Jazz bass and a Stingray [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

I ordered one of these and it should be delivered tomorrow. I haven't tried one, and online reviews are all over the place, so I'll find out for myself. I like that it's a reasonably priced US made instrument with nice hardware, 34" scale, and a nice nut width of 1.6". I ordered it in gold (stock pic attached). I'll let you know what I think once I mess with it.

`

The same one has been hanging locally for many months.
Acoarst I pulled it off the wall to play it. Then I noticed
the absence of neck screws ! Sooooo, sorrrry, but I can't
therefor tell you what it sounds or plays like.

But I can NOT agree that half its DNA is StingRay. Show
me a StingRay without neck screws ... and I'll show you
a StingRay that fits into a gym bag.

New basses are red. Used basses are black.

The neck felt really chunky in my hand. More so than an EB-3. Some like that.

To follow up on this bass purchase: it was in serious need of a setup upon arrival; I also had to replace the squishy, and poorly positioned, mounting foam under the neck pickup. With all that done, the bass plays really well. It looks great and it’s fun to play.

I hate the pickups. So much for online reviews - everyone seemed to love them. They’re thin sounding, muddy, and indistinct. They gotta go.

So with new pickups,
you think it's a keeper?

PU form looks kinda GnL-ish. Hot
pair of MFDs oughta wake it up !

Definitely. It plays great, sounds just fine acoustically, looks pretty cool and it's nice and light. I just need to decide what pickup to go with. Jason Lollar makes a vintage Thunderbird pickup (and offers a black cover!) but they're $200 a pop. I did find one guy over at the Gibson forum who shares my opinion of the pickups. He swapped them out for EMG-TB HZ's. I've had a bass with HZ's in it. They're ok, but Lollar does make a hell of a good pickup...

Ha! That was my first thought, but I already have 3 G&L's, 2 with MFD's.

I wish that bass had a 4 in a row reverse style head stock or something like the Victory bass. Still a good looking bass with 2+2. If money was not an issue I think I might go with two dark stars. I think that would sound and look pretty fabulous ... yanno coming from someone on the internet who's never played one [smilie=grinning-smiley-044.gif]
